SAO would be an absolutely horrible introduction to anime. SNK is overrated, but exceptional in comparison.

SNK?

Ooh

Talon 02-04-2014 03:36 PM

Watch SAO up to the end of the Sword Art arc, stop when it enters the ALfheim arc. Wasn't worth watching unless you skip to episode 23-ish. It was extremely generic and felt like one big filler.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary) can serve as solid entry choices if you're into the school fantasy genre. Kuroko no Basuke (Kuroko's Basketball) is getting very popular lately if you want to try sports.

Pazx 02-04-2014 04:44 PM

Kyoukai no Kanata didn't grab my attention, it felt like a generic school anime with flat characters and the fantasy element wasn't great. More interesting school animes for me would be K-On!, Ouran High School Host Club and Nichijou.

My introductions to anime were (besides scattered episodes of Naruto, Pokemon, DBZ and A:TLA) the film Princess Mononoke, which is undoubtedly one of the greatest films of all time and Soul Eater, a 51 episode anime which was a fantastic introduction to action/comedy/fantasy genres. Soul Eater is a typical shounen at face value, however it has deeper underlying storylines and was overall very enjoyable.

My reason for not recommending SAO as a first anime is that it would be quite a turn off (for anyone really) to get invested in a mediocre show only to see it go downhill.

Can someone tell me what happened to Asuna and Kirito? I can't stand those ears in ALfheim.

Couldn't find a picture of the original.
But, the dub is okay..
Not really.
Find subs for RockMan EXE. Anything past EXE is ear grinding IMO...

Isaac 02-05-2014 05:46 AM

My "intro to anime" was Highschool DxD.

Finished Danganronpa and really liked it,

need to finish Elfen Lied.

Spoiler
Asuna becomes damsel in distress, trapped in a cage and helpless. Kirito goes on an adventure, meets nice girl, girl falls in love with him - oh **** - that's his sister. Incestual complications ensue, they overcome it after like 8 episodes of "daisuki onee-chan~". Asuna tentacle scene, she drops a hotel key card from 30,000 feet cruising altitude and Kirito uses it to save her. But wait - there's more! The Xor of ALfheim tells Kirito to 1v1 him swords with irl pain, sexually harasses Asuna with BDSM elements in front of Kirito and then Kirito's Kayaba powers awaken and he smacks Xor 1v1. Then Xor looks for revenge irl, gets killed 1v1 again by Kirito irl. Asuna is saved, she can gtfo of NerveGear, they sleep together in real irl and they go out in real irl. Aincrad is recreated and Asuna's hair turns blue. The end.

And that's the ALfheim arc in a (terrible) nutshell.

You can always watch that extra episode that came out not too long ago.

It sort of summed up what happened in the entire series.

Should give you a brief visual of what happened in the second part of SAO.

Yeah talk about terrible.

There was that disturbing tentacle-rape scene in episode 21.

After that the series was just poison.

The first two episodes were okay.
Asuna shows up as a strong female lead, shortly after, turns into a token girl.
Man, Karrot-Top is an asshole..he just is so annoying...

I posted here the other day but then the website crashed and it wasnt posted. :cri:

My recents:
Guilty Crown: very interesting conglomeration of about 3 overused themes, which made it more interesting. As it progressed, at first I was reminded of a kind of Kamina-Simon relationship from Gurren Lagann; then beginning the beginning of season 2 reminded me of Code Geass; The last few episodes reminded me of Elfen Lied.

Ergo Proxy: This one was really good. Easily made it to my top 10. The beginning is confusing because you dont know whats happening. Then right when you start to get a good idea of wth is going on, the middle episodes are confusing as f*ck and you cant even distinguish reality. Then the last five episodes are the best.
Spoiler
My favorite side character turns evil and tries to help destroy the world. The more shady side character actually turns out to be good. But he dies before he is able to see his android daughter again ;-;

Currently watching: Mirai Nikki: Good series so far. This Yuno bich is crazier than than the bich sister in Guilty Crown.

Well i do agree there a far better female leads as a whole. One example of the top of my head is Seras from hellsing ultimate, god she is such a badass or any crazy bitch from black lagoon are just far better than Asuna

Sariss 02-08-2014 10:10 PM

So everyone thinks women characters have to be badass or crazy to be good?

Tyler 02-08-2014 10:55 PM

I don't get why Asuna is receiving so much hate. How is it her fault she was made a damsel in distress? The first arc she was great. You got to see her personality shine there. If you want to blame anyone, blame the writer for pushing her into a bird cage with a ********* as her captor. I don't understand why they didn't expand the first arc with more full boss fights and other events rather than making the Alfheim arc.

it was pretty interesting, gave great insight to gons current emotional conflict. It's a good thing they added such a part, id prefer this to happen before what happens next.

Wow after episode 11 samurai flamenco turns into power rangers, such a waste.

I believe I'm the only person in the world that doesn't like the AB! opening. The instrumentals are nice and so is everything but the chorus - but damn, I cannot stand that chorus.

also why is Sakurasou on Crunchyroll PC but not on mobile that frustrates me

and why is Veoh the only place I can watch Guilty Crown on mobile

Pazx 02-12-2014 08:00 PM

Hourou Musuoko seems alright so far, I've only seen 2 episodes but the storyline is heartwarming. It's about two (or three????? maybe four??? i donT kno W) canonically transgender characters (although in the first few episodes I guess it's acceptable to describe them as boy who wants to be a girl and girl who wants to be a boy) struggling with gender dysphoria and body image as they go through puberty. The art and animation isn't flawless, and if you struggle following anime series generally a show where 3-4 of the characters appear to change between male and female sporadically may not be for you, but otherwise I highly recommend it.

Blah64 02-12-2014 09:09 PM

Anyways, my short list of 'must watch':
-Steins;Gate
-Puella Magi Madoka Magica
-The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
-Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry)

_____________________
There are lots of other shows that I really liked, but not many qualify as 'must watch' to me. There are also a lot of shows that prolly should be 'must watch' as well, due to their influence for anime in general, but I either haven't seen 'em yet or I didn't actually like 'em, so don't want them to occupy space in my 'must watch' list.
