Writing this again cuz internet deleted it all. Summarized version.
This had probably been said multiple of times now,
I found SAO somewhat enjoyable for what it was worth, however I was hugely disapointed by the way they had executed what was a could've been masterful plot. Having a series about being trapped in a game gave a ton of freedom and an amazing way to build up a world. You can show the interactions and emotions of the players within this world, however the way SAO did it was by pretty much putting it as a side point and focus on the MC finding and saving a bunch of girls that had barely any development. It felt that the action for most of SAO was just a bonus feature to emphasize the cliche and generic romance and witty drama (I know drama and Romance - source: the massive amount of Romantic Drama series I've seen). That wasted such a good opportunity to follow a more generic route in order to sell with all those girls, even though that's basically what 70% of anime is now.
The second problem is that it was not consistent. With the time skips and the change of arcs each season. It really chews out the original concept that it started with just to have the MC gain more girls and become protected by the millions of plot holes and plot armor. For what it was worth, the popularity never got to me, everything about it could've been done better. For the characters which seems to be the biggest selling point, Kirito who has been isolated before SAO becoming some badass character being able to converse with all the girls, is basically like the comment a long time ago about No Game No Life and how could these NEETs possibly converse with others. It doesn't make sense for a character like Kirito to be able to get all the girls, but it happened anyways, cause Plot Holes and everyone likes that lone wolf dressed in all black. Asuna was okay until she became another Tsundere, the other three girls are just there and Sinon had the best character development and shines the most out of the rest of them.
Akame ga Kill is way better then SAO in everyway, except for character development, since they basically want to remove all the characters that gets any. Story is better, more unique non-run off the mill characters and their executions for fighting scenes are far surperior instead of just hack and slash that SAO has.
