You can avoid the "gradient shading" by using more contrasting colors and less colors total as well. It might look wrong close up but when you zoom out it looks good.

Whoa dark shading on the box and door. The shading doesn't flow well at all. Look at the top right corner of the door. Does that look right to you? The window pane utilizes better color choice and shading.
