It's hyped because its the first "main" handheld Pokemon game to actually use full 3D assets versus 2D sprites, and the current pseudo 3D overworld they currently utilize.

Based on the images I saw, it isn't fully 3d assets, nor were the older games fully 2d. many things that should be polygonated models are actually just giant image textures used for things in the distance that they never bothered to create in 3d. Additionally, the level design seems rather faulty, looping similar patterns of textures rather than mixing them up to hide the effect of it.(yes I know the gameplay isn't final, but usually companies will finish development before posting trailers. Additionally, they would only want to show polished content.)
Newer Pokemon games for the ds like black and white started using partially, 3d graphics to enhance the quality and add new functionality, they just never moved the camera angle to creation the impression of 3d.

Interesting. Well, I guess it is still early to be making any calls. However I can tell you, I might be using a wild pokemon more than my starter.

Yeah, I remember in one of the pokemon games I told my brother to level a flying type pokemon so he could counter a gym, and he ended up leveling it so much that it became his main and his started ended up being like level 40 when his flying type was level 100 xD
