I work in metal fabrication right now (pretty much a bunch of custom metal work, including welding.)
The number 1 pet peeve of all the people i work with is when they hear someone say they want to be a "Welder"
You can become a licensed welder but you are much better off also taking a millwright, machinist, metal fabrication, tool/die making or anything metal related course. You want more skills than simply being able to weld.

But metal work is a a lot of fun and a great career path to chose.
