And if you're trying to install some software that doesn't have source available, there's usually a .deb package for Debian, but I haven't seen Gentoo being supported much. Is there a way to make it work anyway somehow?

Source files are usually always available. If not, downloading binaries is fine too.

Gentoo has the best support community. That's one of the main reasons I use it.
