Gurren Lagann is not a gateway anime at all.
Spoiler
Gurren Lagann lost it's traction when they did that horrible time skip and put more focus on that terrible character, forgot his name, the kid they found in another underground base. If you think throwing galaxies, making a ultra deluxe super combo wombo, having an enemy that was horribly introduced, not to mention ****ing Nia was somehow an Anti-Spiral. Let's not start down the path of the ****ing Anti Spirals either that make absolutely no ****ing sense. Literally, to enjoy Gurren, you HAVE to not think.

It's literally only above how SAO Season 1 ended simply because it was unique.

Edit; kind of ironic you call the people suggesting SAO as delusional culture-less fools, then suggesting something just as bad in terms of story lmao.

As for the topic on hand, What genres are you interested in? If I could get that, I'll be able to point you in a better direction than the usual hype train animes.

I'd like a violent anime

Ehhh. It's action, it's pretty kiddish when it comes to violence.

Mirai Nikki (Future Diary); Possible nudity, I haven't watched in the series in awhile and I marathoned it.
Hamatora
Kill la Kill
Magical Warfare
Broken Blade

Bold are the really violent ones. Mirai Nikki has a bad story however.

Broken Blade is amazeballs. Don't let the episode count fool you, 7 episodes, all an hour long.

Code Geass is amazing but I'm not too sure if I'd recommend it as an entry-level anime...

I don't see why not. It was probably my 5th or 6th anime I started with. It is kind of lengthy though with like 50 episodes I think. Death Note was mentioned somewhere in here before. I would highly recommend that as well.

Try beelzebub it's pretty random but once you get the hang of it, you'll love it.

Gurren Lagann isn't that great for a gateway anime, kinda wanna stay away from fanservice anime as a starter. That could be the same for Sword Art Online too I guess, but Sword Art Online was just typically more popular. Plus SAO doesn't even reach my top 10 favorite anime.

Spoiler
Tell that to the bunch of people crying for Petra.

I admit, that was a very sad moment in the series, but you just don't get to know those characters very long before they get killed. I didn't hardly feel at all for Petra in comparison to some of the other shows I've watched.

Kill la Kill has a lot of nudity from what I've heard. I don't think he wants nudity.

Nudity and strong sexual themes are two, very different, things.

Aikurou Mikisugi would beg to differ:

Exactly why it makes a good first anime: the intentional over the top action is the perfect hook; you can unplug your brain, because no one wants something too confusing for first anime; and when you watch another anime that has a much deeper story, you realize there are shows that are much better than Gurren Lagann.

But not only did SAO lack a good plot, but the action was sparse and not attention-grabbing. It skipped from level 1 > 20 > 60 > escape game early way before level 100; and no action/boring story in between.
