Surprise surprise!
Phillips are trying to ban the Wii (U) due to some patents of theirs.
I think they've already won a case in the UK, and now they want to ban the sale and import of these lovely consoles in the U.S.

It's supposedly all because of the Wiimote and how there's motion sensing technology, to be exact, the infa-red cameras built into the thing.

All they can do is try to get money out of Nintendo, and they're probably going to lose once the case goes to the court of appeals. Especially since a few other companies are already starting to integrate similar technologies into their designs as well.

Patents, unlike copyrights, are a bit more broad in scope because they are for inventions and not ideas. Their claim that they own the patents for 'motion control' and 'wireless devices that can be remotely controlled by a second device' is kind of like saying, "Well, I invented the light bulb, so everything that is similar to or makes use of a light bulb infringes upon my patent."

The same goes for other inventions like smartphones, which Apple and Samsung are in a battle over right now. It's really frivolous for companies to sue each other over this stuff nowadays, but they'll do whatever they can to make up for their own shortcomings.

The legal system at its worst honestly.

I wasn't even aware Phillips still existed or made useful products. I guess they have just been sitting on their patents waiting to sue anybody who comes up with similar ideas to their own.

I bought a Wii U.

Pretty much. Patents are crap these days, because they tend to hinder the progression of technology more than they help the inventors sell their products.

That's why Tesla Motors recently released their electric car patents to the public, which was an awesome move that's going to help dozens of companies and perhaps even whole countries in the long run.

How is it?

I enjoy it so far. My games for it right now consist of
Super Mario Bros
Mario Kart 8
LoZ Wind Waker
and I just bought Ultimate Monster Hunter today but haven't played it yet.

I like how you can play the game on the gamepad and turn off the TV or change it to something else. Probably my favorite feature of the thing so far.

Unless you buy a Wii U for Super Smash Bros 4(Not 2) and the game cube adapter, you will or probably already have wasted money. Tbh, Nintendo hasn't really came out with that great of games that haven't been insane branches like Mario Kart 8 or remakes like Zelda. Smash Bros is probably their ownly game that has a purpose in that there are the people who play it for fun and people like me who play it for tournament money and of course fun but I like a little competition. Right now, I haven't bought and new system because there are no good games out for them an why pay $500-$300 for a system with few games? Ill wait for a little price drop or ill wait till FF15 or LBP3 comes out for ps4 and as for the Xbox one, it is pointless as far as my interest in games go, so that's not an option for me. Wii U and Ps4!

Those are pretty much the games I have other than Monster Hunter. Which I was told by a friend is amazing. I agree though. It's almost like a portable system with the gamepad. I can have the Wii U on and play my games on the Gamepad while someone else uses the TV for other purposes.

A single complaint caused a Wii U ad to be banned.

So Jester do you see yourself using your Wii U, XBone or PS4 more often? Which is the best of the three?

That's kind of a valid complaint in my opinion. I thought the same thing when I saw the commercials. Nintendo doesn't do a very good job explaining the Wii U in commercials for consumers to grasp why it is not the same as a Wii. I think that's one reason its sales hurt.

EDIT: I just watched this particular commercial a second ago. Even though it went by fast the TV did say "switched to Gamepad" indicating that the game was still inside the Wii U console, but the game just switched screens. It's still probably misleading to someone who hasn't touched a Wii U before.

I always love when people tell me I wasted my money due to their opinions, and just opinion, nothing from experience. Don't hate on it if you ain't got it or tried it

Once destiny and the master chief collection come out, I'll be using my xbone more. However until then, I'm having fun on the Wii U so far.
