Turns out it might be possible that we don't need figurines to play Smash Bros. only for some extremely smart AI that learns. It's a pretty cool concept.

this conversation is probably long dead, and I only read the first page, but heres a clarification on the figurines:

"Super Smash Bros for the Wii U will also be compatible with Nintendo's new Amiibo toys; the Skylanders-style figures that can interact with the game. They aren't extra collectable characters you can play as, but instead add a companion to fight alongside you, or a new AI competitor. That way, players not owning an Amiibo are not punished or locked out of content."

I still see no need except the thirst for money in doing this. But hey, at least it's not too limiting.

Yay! That puts me at ease. I'm not really sure what the companion thing means though unless it's like Playstation All Stars Battle Royale where you get a miniature companion that cheers for you every time you get a kill or something.
