GraalOnline 3D

Jw, would it be possible to make a 3D graal server using gs2?

Kiwi 07-09-2013 02:32 PM

i'm fairly confident the answer would be no. the 3D stuff for Graal 3D was removed ages ago.

I don't think it'd be impossible, but the chances of somebody (who would have to be extremely talented with GScript and have past experience with this kind of thing) sitting down and spending a lot of their time on this is extremely low. 3D rendering has been attempted in the past on Graal using polygons, but making a full servers out of it would be extremely difficult.

Drakilor's planetary system was written in GS2 and was posted on the forums back in 2008, and he draws his 3D shapes using different polygons and some crazy math. You can find it here.

I believe at one point Graal did have 3D capabilities but they were removed and the Graal 3D project was abandoned. Dusty's attempt at making a Mode7 system is something you might be interested in looking at, as it's possible that if something like this were to be fully released somewhere, somebody could sit down and make a small server using it, but it's not exactly 3D. You can find it here.

3d has been implemented in the past, and it was horrible.

A while back I was looking through my client's files(can't remember if v5 or v6) and found an empty "3D" folder or something like that. Not sure wether that means there is leftover code or whatever that could still allow for a 3D server or if that's where such code would be found if it wasn't cut.

Personally, I think Stefan should pick back up on the project. I see nothing in its way nowadays, and I'm sure eventually some pretty good 3D servers would be made.

'0' Dusty, your mode7 system is amazing

???

What the heck is mode7 and how is it relevant? O.o

Edit: oh, didn't catch what Emera said x.x

Mini-bump

Hey, Dusty's thread about mode7 left off later last year with Stefan basically saying he fully approves of and supports the idea... Well, so far he's recently gotten GS3 done... So maybe we might see something by Q1-2 2014 :o I wonder how the iPhone client would handle this... I'm sure it wouldn't be too uncooperative, seeing as how I think I heard on Graal.net that its a modified Mac client, which makes sense because iOS is a modified OSX.

@Emera: Thanks for piling all that info for me. Dusty's mode7 looks interesting, and I particularly like what he did in his last video thing. The only problem was, it wasn't 3D. But I think I know a way to make it 3D though but it might not be able to be scripted and such.

I was thinking Google Sketchup, but I'll have to see if Voxels would work.

All the clients probably use the own codebase. Developing and maintaining code for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and Flash would be hell otherwise...

Btw, the other Eurocenter apps on iOS use the same codebase as well and before Graal was even released on iOS I was able to connect to the pc servers with the Bomber Arena client.

lolno

I'm not sure it's still possible but you could draw 3d in 2d easily using 3ds files. I had a 3d space ship spinning around in my old server for some time. This may have been removed when they completely removed the Graal3D code from the client though
