The amount of colors used could be reduced, 19 is a ton for a lil sword. :P

What is the point in reducing colours though?

You may find that pixel artists often advocate a low color count. You might assume that this is just a tradition leftover from the olden days of pixel art, back when video game consoles could only display a certain amount of colors.

If modern computers can easily display hundreds of colors, why shouldn't you use them all? In truth, using small palettes isn't an outdated tradition of pixel art, and there are very logical reasons behind this practice.

Cohesion- When you're using less colors, the same colors will reappear throughout the piece more frequently. Since the different areas of the work share the same colors, the palette ties the piece together, unifying the work.

Control- The smaller the palette, the easier it is to manage. You may, and probably will, want to change adjust a color later on. If you've got 200 colors, it's going to take you a lot longer to make the adjustments, because by changing one color you've thrown off its relationship with the colors neighboring it on its color ramps, and adjusting them means changing the relationships between those colors and their neighbors! You can see how this quickly adds up to a lot of work. With a smaller palette, the effect of changing a single color is more substantial, and there are less micro-relationships to worry about.

Thanks Dylan, makes more sense now.
I used 8 colours on this sword, the blade itself looks a tad plain, any ideas?

I keep trying to anti alias but it always turns out crap :<

EDIT: Tried anti aliasing the metal on the pick, turned out better I guess.

There's the comparison.

Kondie 10-02-2012 10:27 PM

Keep an outline, but don't make it too dark. Also, AA is for the inside so that the borders are softer. You seem to have done it to the background, and if it were used as a sprite, that wouldn't work. Other than that, nice work.

Thanks, yeah I thought about that but on the tutorial they did it to both sides of the line so I thought it was okay. The pick still seems kinda rigid though, what am I doing wrong?

Kondie 10-02-2012 11:53 PM

On the left here is your original and on the right is my remake of it.

http://i.imgur.com/ANoAt.png

The major difference would be that I softened the outline, but kept it so that it wasn't too dark. I added highlights on the border where necessary to give it a metallic shine, but I never brought the inner highlights close to the edge so that it didn't contrast a lot and give a rigid look. I hope this helps. :) (The reason it may still look rigid is that it's a small image and AA doesn't really help on edges like that. I hope it helped you somewhat though.)

LavaClaw 10-03-2012 12:12 AM

Ah okay, makes a lot more sense now, the remake helped a lot. I'll see what I can do with this on my next piece of work. Thanks :)

You can use AA on the outside of the sprite if the background It'll be on always stays the same color.

Kondie 10-03-2012 04:50 AM

You should assume that your sprite will have a dynamic background. The tileset isn't going to be one color after all...

Made a pumpkin sword with some blood splattered on the bandages and blade. Tried smoothing the edges of the pumpkin with Kondie's technique but I didn't manage to get it smooth enough, Is it just the size of the graphic making it appear rigid like last time? What else could I improve with this too?

Dylan 10-03-2012 06:03 AM

Could reduce the colors, 26 is a lot. I played with the pumpkin. :3

Its hard to have less colours and anti alias and add all these nice shading effects though :'(
I see what you did to smoothen the edges of the pumpkin too.

It's not hard, you just have to be resourceful and disciplined. I find shifting hues when shading helps in recycling of colours.

Wow that's completely unintentional.

EDIT: Talon inspired me to make something like that. This started off as a shoulder plate which I turned into a hat. I think I need to add more contrast though.

Me and Storm finished this off. The side view looks a bit funky and i'm not sure what's causing that though. I'll add the rest of the views later when i'm done editing it.

Jester Lapse 10-03-2012 11:06 PM

the sides look off because in the front view the plates are parrallel to the orb/gem thing in the middle but on the sides you moved them down to be ear flaps
