Post your grades (if you wish). So far, I'm off to a good school year. I have great teachers, especially my English Teacher. I've blocked some information off so people don't... find out where I live and kidnap me.

Good work! I do know the life your going through right now, so keep it up and you will be successful!

Could be worse. If you're doing better in a foreign language class than your own then that's bad.

Yeah, it is my second PE class (I am taking it as an elective). Since my school isn't in a city, and we have wooded areas around, why not? Right now we are building fires and shelters. (It is the only class were you can light fires without being suspended/arrested for arson)

How do you manage to get anything below an A- in PE? All you have to do is dress up and pretend like you're doing something physical.

Our system is based on "effort". A guy in the beginning of the year pushed me and I hurt my foot falling into a ditch. Still hurts X.X
Run=hurt
Hurt=looks like I'm not trying

Well, here are my current grades - one month in the year:

AP Physics: A-
Chinese IV: C
AP Gov/Econ: A+
Multimedia Design: A+
AP Lit/Comp: C+
Honors Precalculus: B-

Higbey 10-05-2012 04:00 AM

Hon English A
Ap environmental science B
Latin hon B
Ap US history C
Trig C D or F..
Physics.. C D of F

Its funny because someone taking lower classes can get "straight As" and sound smart. They can cheat and Show more work and other pointless writing and get a better grade than me, because the assignments I get and do are A+, the ones I don't do or screw up get Fs,

Logically if you get more of the A+s, the highest grade, than the other grades, the lowest grade, Fs, then you should be above average, right? It doesnt work that way.

Teachers know I'm smart, know that im eager to learn, interested, and don't cram, don't cheat, and don't disturb class. Yet idiots can get higher grades than me. What do colleges and jobs see? Grades that don't explain anything and are utter misleading lies.

As for weighted gpa, it's rediculously scaled, how can a person in standard be better than me, when I'm in AP and get a C, and they get a standard A..

It makes no sense..

Now for the different levels.. Standard, honors, GT, AP, the like,

Its bull****.
Sometimes the only main difference is more work and less idiots disrupting class. The people who need the most help are in the classes with juvenile delinquents. Sometimes the higher levels don't do anything more advanced or fun.. Just more work.. Not rewarding those who can be in those classes.. As for school systems themselves.. Beyond help..

The education system is broken, and if the federal government doesn't do anything about it, the future is bleak.

The Doctor 10-05-2012 04:00 AM

I take all honors/AP

Higbey 10-05-2012 04:02 AM

Here's a nice example just today.

I hate physics, at least what we are taught. Physics is math. More math than it is science. At least what we are taught, we have to solve equations and formulas and show this value and that value and graph this and that and this, we need to learn how this term applies to that thing..

It's not about anything exciting or experiments or anything like that.

It has "theoretical" problems that are useless for accurate data because we ignore gravity, air resistance, mass, friction, and other things we will always have fore the rest of our lives. Air resistance doesn't apply in space, but then you get into astronomical physics.

Basically, my teacher teaches in a way that I cannot succeed at, on a subject that I despise, in a classroom that is filled with people that do not contribute positively to my learning in any way.

We had a partner activity today. She assigned me to this kid she also sat next to me..

He snickers at me in English when I "act like a nerd" and I feel and hear him going on and making silent jokes about me and basically is a ass to me.

So I'm doing the lab.. And he asks me for the answer.. I tell him.. Couple of problems later im tired of him leeching off me and when he asks me for the answer for the next problem, I show him the activity demo, and he says "I know I know im just asking" and stuff like "I know I'm just uh asking to check my answer", to which I ask him what he chose as his answer then.. He struggles then obviously guesses the answer is no. It was a 50:50 shot and he guessed right, so I tried to explain to him why it's right, then he says "I know that's why, that's why I answered it that."

Next question... Explain why you chose yes or no..

He asks me what the answer is. Trying not to go ape and punch his face in, I irately remind him that I was just trying to explain it and he said he knew.

He then says "we are in a group, we are supposed to work together and check eachothers work"

Finally I try to explain how that no matter how fast he throws a ball horizontally off a cliff, it will still fall the same amount each time.

He keeps saying he knows and that he has got it. He then asks me what I'm writing as the answer.

After class, I tell the teacher and she says she knew, and that he just doesn't seem to want to even try, and that she tried to pair him with people like me that know physics extremely well and understand it..

Im getting Fs on stuff in her class, I'm a low C or below..

And she says this.
The kid I'm talking about? He has a above a B.

How is this fair? The education system is broken, thus all your grades and classes mean NOTHING.

The Doctor 10-05-2012 04:04 AM

And grades do mean something. Colleges actually look if your in AP classes or in a special school. For example, the really smart kids go to AOS in my county which only 40 people are admitted to. They get better scholarships. People with Science honors will be more noticeable than those in Acedemic. It does make a difference. The country is not corrupt.

Exactly, that's the broken bit. Those grades dont mean anything, they look and decide things on those grades that dont tell the truth, that aren't properly done. As I said, I can be much smarter and better at actually learning, a real thirst for knowledge and a enthusiasm for it.

Yet i can get bad grade because of stupid technicalities, teachers unable to cooperate with the way my brain worked, or having a system that because of how my brain is wired I will never be able to score well on.

As I explained in my story, those grades don't tell you how that person did in that class necessarily, they don't tell you the situations, or what the teachers knew that couldn't be expressed in the grades.

I got stuck in honors chemistry because of my math level. My math teacher would not cooperate with me and was a horrible teacher, having many students including myself walking out of his class to go the office to file a complaint.

The grades can't tell you that.

Those classes can differ, their titles never truly mean what their content was, as curriculum isn't always the same and followed the same way..

Your grades mean nothing but a broken systems output that places will wrongly use to judge.

So all the grades in this thread? They mean nothing.

MrSimons 10-05-2012 04:39 AM

I totally agree with you on this one Higbey. Except my situation is a little different. Take a gander at my Math Grade, C. Well I ace in math... Unfortunately my class goes at an extremely slow pace, where I get it first shot. So I am sitting around for the next 70 minutes of my class (Hurray block schedule) listening to a teacher say the same thing over and over attempting to drill it into the heads of kids that aren't even listening. We actually have spent a week on one lesson, and it wasn't even a hard one.

So I am falling asleep bored out of my mind, giving the same things handed the same ****ing problems everyday. Now we get a sub and he puts us in groups and it is the same thing you are dealing with, except he has the nerve to tell me I am wrong and his answer is right...

So I come to my teacher asking if I could get into a class that goes at a faster pace, she says sure understanding I understand the subject, unfortunately the district or school (I don't know nor care) says that my grade is too low and that I don't understand the subject. My teacher attempts to explain my low grade but they won't ****ing listen and just go off what my grade says. Not even bothering to at least let me test to get into a higher level class. So now I can stay in my standard math class surrounded by morons.

Hurray for school systems :D

I was surprised too, but apparently extra credit on multiple assignments adds up.

Pimpsy G. 10-05-2012 12:42 PM

Basically what I am getting from higbeys posts is that grades are not indicative of the character of the actual person and how smart they are, as the vast majority of it is just busy work determined by teachers to see how dedicated you are to applying yourself since that quality translates well to the work force. I would love to have something like the vulcans have in regards to education (much more individual focused and relatable to your study habits instead of linked to generalized tests and subjects) but this isn't Star Trek, and if you can come up with a system that allows for that type of dynamic be my guest.

Any system where you have to take a test at an early age to decide who gets to have a better chance at scholarships and a future is corrupt (I'm assuming that is how this is done since you said Honors), as it does not give a fair chance to all people and is not representative of their IQ level (which, is simply an ego test. IQ does not mean anything and it has been proven many times that there is no one way to determine someones intelligence). Even if it isn't a test and it is based on grade point percentages, you simply cannot tell who is smarter and more favorable for the future through a system like that. Especially at a young age. Everyone is different and deserves an equal opportunity at proving their worthiness for success. I don't see how that stands up as correct when a specific school gets better scholarships and better opportunities, let alone when it has only 40 people.

Kiwi 10-05-2012 02:13 PM

I can't share the exact results, but last semester I got four or so A's on my report card, and then the rest were B's. This semester, I haven't gotten below an A- for any assessments. My A+'s come from English and ICT, mostly. After my, if I may say so myself, assessment work in SOSE, I'm expecting an A+ in that. It seems extremely wrong for me to say that, but, looking around at the rest of my classes assessments, mine was kind of above them.

I'm in my first year of Australian high school. I'm in what my school calls the Magna program, which is a class with a differentiated curriculum to 'cater for our higher learning needs.' Magna is in English, SOSE, Science, and Maths. I'm in it for English and SOSE, but will be in it for Science and Maths next year (or so I'm told).

The kids with the lowest IQs in my school have the higest grades in our school. NO JOKE! The special ed teachers take them out of the classroom on every assignment and just confirm if they know stuff. The kids just go "Yeah" and SHE TELLS THEM THE ANSWERS!!!! Just to agree with Higbey, the system is broken.

Blueh 10-05-2012 10:52 PM

Oh indeed it is. A core not an elective class.

Education system promotes cramming, cheating, doing busywork, spending time out of school doing busywork... Learning to the test... (wanna know why chinas got those high scores? They teach to the test, so they get good grades and it makes them look better.
They don't actually learn more and forget it after a year. )

It's sickening.
