Best Non-Mainstream Manga/Anime

Toss out the popular titles like One Piece or Code Geass, and what is your favorite? Don't try to bend the rules, as that kinda defeats the purpose: be realistic. Something in the top 25 rankings on mangafox, etc, shouldn't qualify.

For me, It's gotta be Alive: The Final Evolution

A strange virus is making its way around the globe, causing its victims to commit suicide. In less than a week, it's become a lethal pandemic. But for a unique few, it does just the opposite... They evolve and become "Power Users."

Taisuke Kanou and his best friend Hirose both become power users, but Hirose sides with Katsumata, a strange man with no regard for human life.

The story follows Kanou as he discovers the secret behind his powers, encounters reporters, other power users, and even the military, as he tries to get his friends back.

The basic plot isn't the most original, but it still is what I think of when I think of manga. The story was finished on the author's deathbed, and holds a certain weight and poignancy at the end that is uncharacteristic of this genre of manga. It's not for everyone, and the ending certainly isn't fairy-tale, but I like it over most mainstream stuff.

Also like Kamisama no Iuutori, because it's pretty funny in a morbid way

Record of a Fallen Vampire, because it easily beats Lelouch in terms of a tragic hero (won't say anymore, or I'd spoil the many plot twists)

Shinigamisama ni Saigo no Onegai O, because the main character is one of the best guile heros I've ever seen

What are yours?

It's made by NIS.
I automatically love it, even though I haven't watched it.

This quote is golden.. :D

I'm not sure how to gauge an anime/manga as mainstream.. I'm guessing Hellsing and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni are becoming more well-known? Unlike Death Note or Elfen Lied, which are probably more popular than the former.. Then Darker Than Black and Black Rock Shooter aren't very well known, but they'll pick up soon.

Higurashi is probably my favorite, though. Great suspense, murder mystery, third person limited point of view, and plot twists. Very entertaining, always keeping me on the edge of my seat. Some might label it.. Disturbing. :P

I really have no idea which animes count as main-stream other than Naruto and Bleach. So here is a whole list of other ones I've watched that were really good. I can't really choose one either.

Code Geass
Nabari No Uo
Death Note
Elfen Lied
Gurrenn Lagann
The World God Only Knows
Sword Art Online
No. 6
Betrayal Knows My Name
Tiger and Bunny
Black Butler
Soul Eater
Angel Beats
Guilty Crown
Kids on The Slope

I do not know what constitutes a "mainstream" anime. But one of my favorite "un-popular" animes would have to be Inu x Boku SS.

Any Hayao Miyazaki film if they count, not that many people in the United States know about them compared to Naruto and one piece, and I just love their worlds. The Castle In Thy Sky is my favorite.

But if were talking on the more obscure side, for some reason I like toriko. Its so weird but so awesome at the same time.

I loved Castle in the Sky! I haven't seen it in so long, but it was a great movie.

But just when she is in front of the White House, Washington DC, she gets into trouble, and only the unexpected intervention of one of her fellow countrymen saves her. However, this man, who introduces himself as Akira Takizawa, is a complete mystery. Review: *Might contain spoilers*
Spoiler
Higashi no Eden (or Eden of the East however you want to call it) is a new anime series produced by Production I.G, and it was one of the most anticipated series of the Spring 2009 season. After quite an impressive trailer before the anime aired, I just knew I had to watch this show which looked like it had a lot of promise. Did it live up to my expectation? Read ahead to find out.

Story:
+ This anime definitely brings a very interesting plot.
+ The level of mystery and suspense will leave the viewer wanting more every episode.
+ Definitely one of the most refreshing stories in recent seasons.

- Its is only 11 episodes long, a very uncommon number for an anime.
- The ending leaves you with a cliffhanger that the movies are expected to resolve.
- Because of the # of episodes, plus the announcement of 2 movies. The anime ending does not feel like it brings any closure to the overall story.

Art:
+ Fantastic art in both characters and backgrounds throughout the anime.
+ Very artistic animations for both the Opening and Ending themes.
+ There is really nothing bad to say here, this anime brings some nice eye candy to the viewer.

Sound:
+ Very good OP and ED songs. They are really cool to listen to.
+ The soundtrack is also really good, complimenting some scenes really nicely.
+ The voice acting is solid through the series, specially for Akira.

Character:
+ Takizawa Akira is main driving force in terms of character in this anime. He is pretty much the only one who constantly shines.
+ Other Selecao members are all unique and different in personalities, and are also very interesting people and have some good development (as short as some may be).
+ Akira is as mysterious as a character as he is likeable, he doesn't take things TOO seriously and also provides some good comedy.

- Saki, despite being likeable, just doesn't seem to contribute much to the overall plot despite being a main character.

Enjoyment: This anime was highly entertaining, despite ending in a cliffhanger it left me wanting more every episode and it would never feel boring. With the movies set to bring a conclusion to the anime, I can't wait to see them.

Overall Higashi no Eden proves to be a very enjoyable and entertaining anime which brings some rather unique and interesting plot that will be able to keep your interest from its unique 11 episode run. However because the series itself is not complete without the movies, the ending might feel a little underwhelming to some. Regardless, this anime surpassed my expectations and its a fantastic show to those looking a solid plot, likeable characters, beautiful visuals, and enjoyable music. I highly recommend people try this anime out, I dont think you will be disappointed.

Trailer:

It sounds better in original language, better than dubbed version.
