Cheating SFX?
 

So I know a girl who wants attention so badly, she chose SFX and tried to be good at it (so she could be hired), she recently was hired for a server called Graal Playhouse (dafuq?) and she's the sfx admin. I asked her how she got so good at SFX and she said she gets sound files from the internet and fiddles around with them. Would that be cheating or is that SFX?

I thought SFX was music/sounds YOU created and recorded. Although I have heard of people taking files that are allowed to be used by everyone and remixing/tweaking them. It really depends I guess. I'm not a sound effect expert, but I would assume that would be the case.

Hmm.. Well, to me anyhow, it mostly depends what audio she's fiddling with. If it's allowed for commercial use, what she's doing isn't illegal. Although, if she's just changing instruments and adds a few notes, that's okay for practice but maybe not for admin, as it'd limit what you would be able to do for the server (since it depends what's available on the internet). If she's using copyrighted audio, then that's another issue entirely.

It depends on what sound files she's taking. If it's copyrighted sound (like a retail song or a sound not found on a royalty-free sample site), then it's probably not something she should be doing.

I believe they can. Maybe if it's like a signature sound of an artist. I don't know specifics on that one.

I wish I was SFX for some server. I've applied for Zone, Stroseria, and Delteria, but Zone isn't accepting anymore SFX, Stroseria closed, and Alpho never got back two me since I sent him two songs for Delteria. iClassic should really have a sound update.

Using free sounds as bases for editing and such is fine, some people cannot afford the equipment to get a high quality recording neccessary for some editing techniques that require sounds of such quality

It's not cheating. However, if she gets caught stealing copyrighted stuff she may get in a lot of trouble. It's good she's doing it on a server that won't last long anyway. It just bothers me that someone would stoop so low and say that they're an SFX artist and do something like that.

No. You'll be fired if they find out. Depending on the server.
Don't think of SFX as something you can just go and fake it and say you can do it. Put time into your music. Put work into it. Put love into it. Make it your own, original. That's all the fun of making SFX: making it your own.

That's what I find annoying. She isn't just in the sfx team she's the SFX admin.
