There were quite a few hats ripped from MapleStory, from what I've seen. Funny part is they didn't even bother to put it on the right side of the head, lol.

Uploaders have to be careful with this ****, it's not like Graal is some obscure game on the dark alleys of internet anymore. It's a fairly popular game now that makes a lot of money. Copyright = way more important than it ever has been before.

There is a difference between outright stealing graphics from another game(especially competing games) and alluding to popular characters. Now, I haven't seen this Pikachu hat but I doubt it's actually a rip of any actual Nintendo graphics, though it probably does infringe on the character design. They need to probably switch it up, like changing the ears or something akin to that. Then it becomes a tasteful homage :)

I wasn't talking about a pikachu hat, in fact i didnt know there was one. I was explaining the next few events in a less serious way..

Only thing I can think of was how much the allowance for images over 8bit backfired.

Since every image with only 5 colors used gets saved as an image with a 64k palette, and it allows 'dem scrubs to just resize a stolen image (without even the effort to remove the anti-aliasing! :O).

Not like this stopped anyone before >8bit images were supported lol. They'd just resize, transparent the background with ****ty AA and downgrade the hell out of the quality.

As long as they avoid trademark names and design infringement there's really no problem lol, it's simply a homage. For example a red plumbers hat with a white circle and "M" would be a no-no, however a red plumbers hat with a white circle and say... a mushroom icon would be fine. There's nothing distinctive about Edward's hair that can be copyrighted, and they call it "Edwin's Wig", therefor simply a homage :)

I love how they crack down on us for copyright, but not themselves. Ripping graphics from another game and selling them is illegal.

Changes are either a player submitted these and whoever handles the uploads wasn't aware, or one of the staff did it knowingly, and the other stuff either haven't caught on, or again, unaware of where it's from.

In the end it falls on a single individual, and staff can't all be able to tell where graphics come from. In this case it's Maple Story, but who would be able to tell if they ripped graphics from some obscure game that's not really that popular?

Report it to the appropriate staff before judging staff and instead judge them on how they actually deal with it after having it brought to their attention.

They'd include the court fees in the claim. All they'd have to do is send Eurocenter a C&D, Eurocenter would be stupid to ignore it.

I doubt they would just try a c&d, they would know they would just remove it, they would want money too.

Small things like this are rarely worth the time/money to bring it to court, especially when it's over country borders and such.

I can imagine if they were sued for stealing their defense would be: "Any artwork uploaded to the internet is for sharing and everyone in the world to use."

Nah they would probably pull some liability crap about uploads being mandated by players and not employees(in the same way Youtube or other sites like it handle copyright).

Lately ive seen Graalians steal copyrighted heads and call it sharing lol, this is sorta whats going on with hats. COPYRIGHTED GRAPHICS ARE TAKING OVER GRAAL EVERYONE FLUD THIS THREAD WITH CUSTOM HATS TO UPLOAD SO WE CAN SAVE GRAAL FROM GETTING SUED! lol

It's pretty much impossible to completely prevent copyrighted works like described in the OP from getting uploaded unless the uploader has seen it before. Most are familiar with Nintendo and other popular characters but sprites from games like Maplestory are a lot harder to catch.

I personally wouldn't have known the flower was ripped from Maplestory and I've actually played the game.

So if you notice copyright-infringing graphics report the person, take a screen-shot and email it to the Classic's (or Era's if that's where you notice it on) support email and it will be handled appropriately.

If it's not directly ripped, then there's really nothing wrong with it. For example, using Link's head directly ripped from Link to the Past or Minish Cap would be a big no no, however a head with blonde hair and a green cap is fine(in fact one of the default heads is exactly this).

I mean, feel free to report stolen stuff, or things you even suspect is stolen if you can provide proof to the staff(to make their job easier). Otherwise just calling stuff stolen with vague claims and no proof is just going to waste staff time trying to find out exactly where it's from, if it's even violating a copyright.

(Also, players don't really copyright heads when they upload them. Apparently when your graphics go on Graal it's owned by Graal, giving other players right to edit and use them. It sucks, but you can't claim "copyright" just because another player is using an edited version of your head. However, most staff don't tolerate this, so feel free to report it. Just don't report it as copyright infringement. Actually, the technicality of copyright and such with uploaded graphics is... complex to say the least. All I'm saying is don't report players/graphics because of copyright, as you should reserve copyright reports for more important things like stealing graphics from other games, not because someone is using your head.)
