Let's get the lag fixed on Classic

I don't think that you realize how laggy the game is until you actually try to play. This happened to me last night and I wasn't aware of how common and frustrating the freezing is. Apparently this is an issue for everyone, not just a few people, and it has been around consistently for the past 3-4 weeks. I don't think that playing under these circumstances is fun at all and I honestly don't know how you all have done it.

Staff members like myself are unable to fix this issue. Instead, I'm going to need to show that this is a common problem that affects a lot of people. Many people have tried to explain their issues, but 'its laggy' and 'fix the lag' are common things to say, even when it isn't lagging. So, to get this addressed I think the best idea would be to record your playing and upload an example of how bad the lag is for you onto YouTube. Please also provide the device you're using, the amount of players were online, your country location and any other details that you may feel are relevant.

If I'm able to get a fair few videos of this I'll stick them in a playlist and forward it on. If you're able to contribute to this, please do so, and post your video in this thread.

Just a notice that some other factors could also affect gameplay. For example, using the widest range zoom level will increase "lag".

It's probably worth mentioning that everyone use the same zoom level or other similar settings that could impact performance.

Also, different device recording methods could affect gameplay. For example, using a screen-recording app or using AirPlay Mirroring to record the screen will use more system resources, causing more "lag" and giving inaccurate results.

A bit like era-go, stefan needs to actually put some information out on what the hell is happening not just 'oh were working on it'

Liam Kelly 07-27-2013 05:42 PM

how about we spread people out around the world- I find the city to be the worst for lag and its because there is like 500 people there always-need a way to bring people into the world.

I get freezes like every 10 or 30 seconds >_< shame I don't have a youtube account and because I PK it triples the frustration and the sparrers aren't exactly happy by reading there status.

iHot 07-27-2013 06:57 PM

Rufus, why can't we have someone like you on Era?

There's that guy in Southridge named '*Ruf'

Thallen 07-27-2013 07:44 PM

been lagging this way for nearly a month, I know because I've sparred nearly every single day and it is an occurrence in something like 95%+ of the spars
just constant spikes for absolutely no reason, makes offensive sparring and comboing impossible
will make a video later

Dusty 07-27-2013 08:45 PM

This is the best I could do considering how random the spikes tend to be. The spikes weren't as long and spaced out as they typically are, but more constant/shorter this time.

Maybe, I dunno, because iEra already knows the lag is due to the lack of server resources or network resources and can't fix it themselves without the assistance of either Unix or Stefan?

But it does? If you read the thread, he was questioning why iEra doesn't have someone like Rufus, in other words, someone that tries to fix problems like the latency in-game.

Anyway, we're getting off-topic. I haven't had any footage, but sparring seems to be painful with the intermittent server connection drops/dead packets/etc.

Rufus isn't directly trying to fix the lag, but to show Stefan exactly the problem. Communicating with Stefan can sometimes be difficult, english is not his native language and... well, sometimes he just completely misses the point. Therefor Rufus doesn't want to fix lag himself, but have something to show Stefan to explain exactly what players are experiencing because "It's lagging" and "there are lag spikes" mean nothing to Stefan.

Yes, but he can already see that cpu usage is up between 60-90% at all times and he can probably view logs to see that other resources are being ran through.

Stefan is aware of the latency problems and has even moved a few servers to new machines (iZone + iDelteria) so that they can handle excess amounts of players, but iClassic + iEra should still be on an older machine. Stefan misses the point nine times out of ten and is nearly impossible to communicate with, so showing him videos of players lagging probably won't do anything. Hell, you'll be lucky if you can get anything besides "x-x" and "well maybe we can upgrade server x-x" when presenting this to him.

But yes, you're right, saying/showing Stefan that there's lag will mean nothing. He knows it is apparent already.

Staff have talked to him about the lag going on with iClassic and he always just looks at the numbers and says "lag is down from last month. We're on a better machine, everything looks fine." As far as what I've seen, he literally has no clue what's going on with the lag spikes specifically. Videos do speak louder than words in this instance and if we have a few videos from a few players showing the exact same lag spikes occurring then the chances of him taking it seriously increase.

iClassic isn't suffering from the high ping that the PC servers are getting because of the anti-DDoS. They're just "hiccuping" at large intervals and as far as I know iClassic's machine isn't being stressed by scripts.

fp4 07-27-2013 10:50 PM

Graal's networking desperately needs to be updated.

Main changes that would help a lot:

1. UDP instead of TCP.
2. Built-in clientside movement interpolation.

Platinum 07-27-2013 11:10 PM

Players just need to spread out more.

That's a bad plan. The daycare is packed so you don't want to 'taint' the video with framerate drops and other possible bottlenecking. Just need to show the constant lagspikes.

There should be more things to do around the map. To spread everybody out and stuff. Like quests :0

twilit 07-28-2013 01:35 AM

Stefan is French not German......... Eurocenter is in Paris...

Usually when the server is lagging, its systems lag too (fort flags freeze, menus dont load, baddies are frozen etc), but none of that is happening, so all this time I thought it was client lag. When I freeze lag, it doesnt seem like everyone else lagged at the same time too. Could this be caused by high player count?

Players will never spread out. Sorry. Players sit and idle in Graal City for various reasons, but the most important thing to realize is that they're idling. Therefor content outside of Graal City means nothing to them, because they're not even there.

According to Stefan most lag isn't coming from scripts or playercount, but many players in one level. Yet players whine when they get unstuck from Graal City...

So basically, we need something that can attract players to go out of an area.

I did an experiment: I said that rufus was giving hats out in MoD town. A few people went. Not much of a difference though.

When nexus is open, it lags. A lot. Why don't we have two nexuses, open at the same time in different areas? Halves the lag on a level, but contains the same content.

OR we could find out why people flock to graal city.
I asked two questions to the people there:
1. Why they stay in graal city?
2. What would make them leave
The answers were:
1. People, non-pk,
2.PvP, events, shops.

That won't work, because you're missing the point. New content will make players go check it out... and then they go back. They will always go back because their appeal is not content but idling. Either for hours, or to advertise whatever the hell they're advertising... they do so in Graal City. They always will, and players in most online games always clump into areas like that.

LiA 07-28-2013 03:30 AM

I will do mines next Friday when I get back!! Also someone told me that the server lag was due to GS3? (if that's what it's called).

^^^^this

1.I have suggested this before. Simply put it in the forums and in the news/fb that the idle warp time is going to be dramatically reduced (20-30 seconds) due to severe lag issues caused by idling in graal city. don't allow ppl to have the ability to idle.

2.Or just change it so most of the gmap is pk. They can't idle very well if they are dying. There are plenty of pools/buildings you can go in to keep from being pk'd.

Thallen 07-28-2013 08:34 AM

someone needs to communicate to Stefan that the lag issue isn't anything in the routing or network infrastructure or whatever, it seems like something that is caused by a stressed playercount

saying this because when the server wasn't able to be connected to and there were only 800 people online at 8 PM the other day, sparring was as smooth as ever

ufoburan 07-28-2013 08:41 AM

I believe I mentioned this before, but the lag has been crappy since end of may/begging of June which is when the vast majority of players(in the usa)who are on average (12-16) are out of school on summer vacation and the player count has been a good 3-400 higher than normal almost 2k on daily. Where as in the fall and winter when a lot of days the player count struggled to reach 1.5k So i just naturally figured the lag was from a higher than normal player count do to this.

HON3Y BADG3R 07-28-2013 11:01 AM

Part of it is that its summer.

Graal city needs to become smaller. Make a underground area with stalls. The stalls will be sorted by guilds, shops, and contests. Theyll be free and it will be a long line of player stalls advertising there guild and things. This could be put as a staircase down, while up top, its all pk. The area can even be put on a smaller server to reduce lag!

iHot 07-28-2013 11:05 AM

Would you mind if I gave you a video of iEra? I'm pretty sure out lag is worse than iClassics if you can imagine.

Rotaruc 07-28-2013 11:09 AM

And how is this possible? There's no way to differentiate players who are sitting there, PMing, Chatting, and being active staring at screen. To those who are actually AFK.

The servers just need new systems, something that can easily hold over 2000 players, while running smoothly. It's not people idling, or sitting there causing trouble, it's the server that can't help but cause lag due to its outdated systems.

Pretty sure he's referring to framerate lag, having lots of players on screen seems to cause that, don't see why it would cause network lag since there's no specific hosts for specific levels.

There are some apps on the AppStore I believe, but you have to pay for those.

I would use the app "iCamRecord" but it's only accessable via Jailbreak, Cydia.

AimeeAdelphos 07-28-2013 04:13 PM

I don't mind paying, it'd be handy to have anyway.
