Mechanical Keyboards
Learning towards buying one but unsure of which, what are the kids nowadays using?
|
I bought a Cherry MX Blue switch mechanical, but I had to return it last week for reasons.
I enjoyed it while I had it. :'( |
Depends what you want to use it for? I have a Cherry MX Red, which I absolutely love and feel it's the smoothest transition from the membrane keyboard you're most likely using. Blues are much more resistant but provide more feedback, Reds are linear, light and quick. Haven't heard much about Browns.
|
I have Cherry MX Green and it's really loud...
|
I have the browns. They don't click but are still noisy. I think I would get the blues if I was buying another keyboard.
Your best bet would be to walk into a store that has these on display and just try it out. There is a lot of personal preference involved here. |
Blues are very noisy when gaming, you get used to it but unless you're a typist get browns instead for general use.
You can buy sampler kits: http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKe...mmendedsellers |
Yeah but blues got dat click doe.

red master race for osu

What's the hype about mechanical keyboards? All I hear is that they're noisy as hell. Why would I want one when it would just annoy my family members? What are the perks?
All I really need is any new keyboard. ****ing space key is constantly getting stuck, even after I cleaned it out. It's 15+ years old, so I wanna replace it but I'm cheap. Pain in the ass to type, even more frustrating when games use it. |
The switches in mechanical keyboards generally mean you won't ever get that 'stick' issue and, if you do, you can replace it easier than a cheapo keyboard. The difference in color is basically how much pressure you have to use to get a keystroke and how much noise it makes.
http://www.overclock.net/t/491752/of...user_heading5b this is the most comprehensive guide to mechanical keyboards you will find anywhere. http://lifehacker.com/how-to-choose-...-you-511140347 this is a fun and quick (relatively speaking) guide on the basic differences between colors and types. |

They're much more responsive and smoother than membrane keyboards. The keys will literally never get stuck and have a much, much longer lifespan than membrane keyboards. You'll get a lot of feedback when you type, whether it be a loud audible click like Blues or simple resistance response like Browns, which can make a surprising difference in your dexterity when you type. It's like typing on an Surface touch keyboard, which gives you no feedback when you type - feels like absolute **** - versus any other membrane keyboard. Keystrokes have much different actuation points than membrane keyboards, which can feel mushy to type on, whereas with mechanical keyboards, you can /feel/ each individual key you type.
The difference isn't night and day like the Surface vs. other keyboards, but it's definitely noticable enough for me to more than justify the purchase. |

I live alone and use blues, could honestly give no ****s about how loud they are
I'm also a writer though |
Can anybody recommend a good keyboard for somebody who types a **** load? I don't really game too much so I'm not bothered about that. I'm looking for something that feels nice to type with but isn't too expensive.
|
@Emera If you don't mind the 1980's look, the IBM Model M actually feels incredible to type on FWIR and they go relatively cheap on eBay. I use a Corsair Vengeance K70 with MX Reds, they feel great to type on. The tactile response isn't as prominent as Blues, but they're very linear/smooth and give just enough resistance and click for me. Quick as well, coming from a hardcore osu! player where I need them to be fast as hell. Would run you $110, would recommend though.
Head over to r/MechanicalKeyboards, they know a lot more than I do as for recommendations. @Skill Just go to Best Buy or a Microsoft Store and see for yourself, they'll usually have some Razer BlackWidows, Corsairs or SteelSeries mechanicals to try for yourself. Can't really understand it until you try. |

Not sure how accurate it is though. This is a good read: http://www.keyboardco.com/blog/index...ical-switches/ |
Which type will let me move around easily by not pressing the key down all the way. Like you barely press and it already recieves the input. Not sure if I explained properly, I know zid uses them.

Blue has that "click" sound that makes you sure that your button press has been registered. Brown has a little bit more feedback than the other switches,it's mostly used by gamers. |
Nvm, someone told me it was o-rings to get a faster feedback.

Another thing I don't like is that they are marketed as being essential for that comfortable quick response and whatnot but I've tried membrane and mechanical and I think that it's not worth the extra 60-100$ for what they offer. I don't see how it is dumb to consider it to be overpriced or overrated. Out of experience they are a bit of a gimmick for me. If I offended you or something I'm sorry because you seem to like them quite a lot :) |

It fits all Cherry MX mechanical keyboards and does not enhance performance at all. It only makes it feel nicer and dampen the loud "cracking" sound of plastic slamming against plastic. Discomfort affects gaming so if you end up liking them, the rings can help you perform better. If you don't like how it feels you can easily remove them the same way they went on.

i'll ask one of my friend if he could lend me 10 or so....i'll try them out and leave a little review here. |
Yeah, try some out if you're interested. Arrow keys or something like that. Putting the rings on took me about 15 minutes for the whole keyboard, little effort required on each one. Just be careful on the keys with stabilizer bars.
|
I've got a Ducky Shine 4 with Cherry MX Reds. Perfect for games like CSGO, but the keys can be very sensitive. When I first got a keyboard with red switches I'd rest my hand on the keys, then when I looked back at the screen it was as if i was holding down the key, but you get used to that pretty quick

Longer keys like the space bar, right shift, numpad enter, etc. have little metal bars so if you press down on one end of the key, the whole key is pressed down. I'm mobile now, so I can't link a video on it (should watch one when you do it), but you pretty much just slip it out of a little plastic hook instead of pulling it straight off.

Blues feel great for low-APM games like MOBAs tho |

Any mechanical switches other than reds severely handicap you when playing games like osu, which is what I'm using as a reference point. I can't imagine a dota player being handicapped by using blue switches as opposed to reds. |
