Becoming a Decent Sparer

So a good majority of you on this forum are sparers. I was wondering how you all became the level of sparer you are today.

Peraonally I am not a decent sparer. I have a "gift" in which I'm either really good at something or I suck and will never get better. Sparing is the latter for me, so I've come to terms that I flat out suck and will never get better (I've been told I'm so crap that I'd be considered an account to boost off of).

Practice.
Everyone sucked when they started, but you'll eventually get better. Improving is the most fun part of sparring.

Why don't you want her to watch you?

CrimeWatcher 07-15-2015 02:42 AM

Spar in the streak rooms if you wish to eventually improve because that is where you will find actual competition you will soon learn to adapt to. Don't make the mistake of sparring in the side rooms where there is no competition. Although your stats may be better from sparring in the side rooms, your skill does not follow.

Grammar Nazi Note: The derivatives for "spar" are "sparrer" and "sparring," with 2 Rs. With 1 R, it looks like "spare."

Here, if you really want to maximize your potential as a Graal sparrer who spends their entire day going hard on their PC or iDevice, you'll need this.

Use code L33tSparr3r for 10% off your entire order.

Practice. Sparring in the streak rooms is a good idea.

Don't aim to be decent. Aim to be amazing. Aim to be the best.

Worst case, you aim high and hit low. Good luck, my friend.

MBK 07-15-2015 08:12 AM

practice and determination...you will not fail lol.

Neil 07-15-2015 09:11 AM

Practice! That's the only real way to get good...

Albie 07-15-2015 01:16 PM

Set yourself a goal, eg 10 spar wins a day, and increase that by 1 every day.

I'm going to be honest I sat there for about 10 minutes trying to figure out how the hell I was meant to manipulate "spar." So thanks for that clarification.

As for everyone else thanks for actually giving advice. I was sort of expecting nothing but trolling. But I'm happy with the comments J've gotten.

There is no way in hell 10 spar wins a day is possible. But I understand what you mean.

Doesn't matter about the losses. The more you lose, the more you learn and improve. This well help you get your 10 wins.

Pickles 07-15-2015 04:56 PM

I have stated I don't give a **** about losses.

I just realized he wasn't asking for tips. He was just asking how people became as good as they are.

I know, I'm just saying that you should be able to get 10 wins per day. I don't know your skill level though, so I guess I have no idea.

I probably became high tier after maybe 3 months of sparring. I didn't see improvement again for many years when I actually became staff on playerworlds and ran tests to better understand hit detection and directional weaknesses, stuff like that. So, it's one thing to get a good feel for sparring and know how to beat people just out of comfort for sparring styles and strategies, but at a higher level you only really improve by knowing player tendencies and more intricate mechanics that have to do with movement and hit detection.

Which is what some of us need to be able to know, if only we had a super detailed, well written and factual resource where we could learn about the technicalities of sparring too...

Where do you think he got his?He wrote it himself(assuming)...so we basically got 2 ways to know what Thallium knows:

1.Blackmail Dusty that we have his noods in exchange for all the information.

2.Become an admin on playerwords and go through all the trouble of finding all that stuff ourselves...

the first one would be pretty easy...

Aguzo 07-15-2015 10:02 PM

I think even if you had all the "secrets", it feels better when you figure them out yourself.
If you really want to know, I guess I can try to make a guide this week.

I still think blackmailing Dusty would be better.

Making a guide can solve the how to be a good sparrer issue entirely
