Greek Mythology Project
Over the next few months I will be creating Greek Mythology models for my website portfolio davidkrout.com and the Greek Mythology information page I created a while ago: Greek Mythology. Once I'm done I'll add all the characters and information about them. I don't know about you all, but Greek Mythology is one of my favorite topics. Spoiler

After Medusa I'll finish up Odysseus. Currently I am fixing up the bones/armature for the man and woman. Once her bones are in and inside of the snakes, the snakes will be repositioned and won't look like they are sticks on her head. I've also since redone the lower half of the snake to look a little more decorated near the skin. Need to fix the tail color some.

I told myself I'd finish it before I went to sleep, but it didn't happen. Got some of it done and I'm really liking it so far. Need to head to sleep, I have to get my MacBook Pro checked out in the morning since next month is the last of the warranty, and then head to my grandparents to help out around the yard again.
Do any of you think I should change the eyes to be something like pure yellow? Would it be a little more scarier or is it fine? The bottom image is the look I'm going for. |

Thank you all, the website is still under construction, not sure I enjoy the grey at the top and I think it needs to be lighter. I also need to make it more mobile and more youtube friendly and remove some of my older stuff that doesn't look all that great.
Once Medusas hair is done, I'm going to move on to the next model, not worried about rigging everything yet. Next is young Odysseus. :) |

I bring my MacBook Pro back to Apple on Wed to get the screen repaired to due a dim light. They couldn't find anything wrong with my battery. Hopefully after I've reformatted my computer I can find some other problems before my warranty ends..
Yesterday I was helping my friend Alex with some game development, but this is what I have so far with Medusa. Her front, left, and right side looks good, need three more snakes to help the back. I think it sort of hits the mark. I'll raise her chin and probably raise the nose some. Imagine her with her mouth open, fangs showing and some of the snakes mouths open and hissing. :) |

I made it look a little less bald lol..
The hair inside will look better at a later date. Started on Odysseus. Something broke as I transferred all my data off my computer. Need to fix the snake head textures. |

I have no clue what I'm doing with this exactly. I do know Odysseus was shorter than most of the greek heroes. Still trying to find a good height for that.
Going to make the curls go out or down further... But for the most part I guess this is it. I'll probably make weapons and shields next, then older Odysseus. I'll also add some textures to the hair to make it look better and fix the front hairline. |

So, I got my Mac back and upgraded to 16GB ram and 1TB SSD. Took a while, and I didn't get much done. This is where I was when I left off. I also had time to think and I'm not entirely sure if I should use this as Odysseus or not.
I know Athens loved their curls, but I need to do more research. Actually, not sure I changed much since the last picture. I haven't had my computer for the last several days... Need to help my friend on Unity then I'm going to start working on it again. Also, I'm probably changing Medusas eyes to black. |
Okay, it looks like the game is actually starting and will start as a maybe 10 level demo.
Looks like I'll have to try to think which three characters it should start with and what we should plan out for it. What type of landscape it should be on. Needs to be pretty good to get a kickstarter going. Simple but good. |

I think it will certainly start with Hercules. I don't want to give too much away but I think this is the demo timeline.
1. Hercules - The Nemean Lion 2. Odysseus - Gift to Troy 3. Zeus - Family Reunion Also, it is a work in progress but I think this is what the HUD will look like so far... Obviously will have some changes, more than likely. PC Controls can just be a three button mouse and 'W','A','S','D' keys, "esc", 'M' and 'I'. I need to add a button to the right. |

I took 3D modeling at a community college on Blender a many years ago and 3D modeling in Maya Autodesk 2-3 years ago. I'm using Blender now because it is free and I like it better lol.. Relearning it as I go, but if you keep trying you'll be just as well.
The actual detail will go in before the characters are put into the game. Also, that background is not mine, just a thrown in background. Currently I'm adding this HUD to unity and moving a box around to see if it works. |

head and bod dont seem proportionate in medusa

I try to think of it like a barbie doll, most people would like to see the head, so they are certainly larger than they should. I don't remember but I believe all the heads are 2x bigger than average.
Once I get the Unity HUD running, I think I'll get a character to move around and see if it looks bad or not. I really can't know how it will actually look until I test it. Might have to resize them. :( |

Due to his hair being puffy in the front, I made the helmet wide in the front which doesn't look so great... Might have to fix that later. Anyway, trojan helmet.

For the game demo I need to finish:
Hercules - The Nemean Lion Hercules and Lion Cave, club, bow and arrow √, Outside cave. Odysseus - Gift to Troy Odysseus (need to redo hair) √ - Trojans / Ithicians Armor, Shield, Sword, Wood planks, Trojan Horse Landscape, beach, gates of troy, small inside troy scene. Zeus - Family Reunion Zeus - Chronos - Rhea Island, Rock spot for Chronos, Cup, Powder stuff. Which makes me wonder why I even did the cyclops lol.. |

Looks really awesome. I love that bow animation especially. I'm sorry if it was mentioned before, but is this Z brush or Blender?

I haven't actually used Z-Brush yet, but I believe the sculpting creates more faces on the model than necessary. Although, I think it is also used to export the textures and place them on simpler models also.. Honestly the reason I haven't used it is you need a PC to get the gen-key to work.
I'm using Blender and the Unity game engine. Currently having a problem with the HUD though, can't get the joysticks to show up. :/ |
What do you all think of this for PC?
Q - Quest / Info E - Pickup Items WASD - Move I - Inventory M - Minimap (enlarges) P / Esc - Pause / Options Left Click - Main Weapon or Left Punch Right Click - Sub Weapon or Right Punch Middle Mouse - Swap between two item sets. Shift - Run Space - Jump Most of it seems intuitive. I'll make an option for Left Handed mice and switching the mouse controls to Left and Right hand, separately. I spent 2-3 days working on this. I feel like someone else could have done this in a few hours lol.. |

Okay, so, I realized by resizing my people the heads resized as well, which means I need to fix a few meshes.. However for the most part they are okay. I was going to double the regular head size, might still do that, but for the most part it is alright. I am just going to keep the base meshes head as the average head size and change the body accordingly. Had to take a step back and re-work both base meshes.
Yes, I do want the heads bigger than normal, the game is stylized like that, but I might size them down slightly. After I'm finished with the two base meshes I'll work on Hercules. Edit: I guess I'll resize the girl 1.5 inches, not very much but seems better in my mind. The guy I'll do 2x head length as well. |

Finally fixed up Hercules's body, now just have to fix up the head and hair. Then start rigging and animating.
Spent most of the night working on hair. There is another one kind of like the top left but better and blond, which ultimately went to the top right to be shorter and more curly. I'll finish that tomorrow. |

Do you have a reference for Hercules? And honestly I think he looks way too thin to be the strongest man in the world.

This is him so far, needed to keep him low poly. I'll see what I can do to give him larger biceps again without them being too square. I'm already pushing 6-7k polygons. :(
Fixing the clothes tomorrow. I've already rigged him... without the clothes.. Then I realized they were gone. I'll probably have to redo it then rig the face. |
Hercules Walk Animation test-1
After multiple times of re-rigging and trying to fix it up a bit. Here is the first walk cycle animation test. The cycle still needs work but it is enough to put into Unity. I'm back in MD working at my grandparents too though, so I might not get too much finished. |
When I get back home in 2-3 days I will work on an idle animation and try to get in on unity. I've popped it in but I haven't gotten it to work correctly. Would be better if I had two animations as well.

Hercules Idle (Looped by another website) I'll fix his finger movement after the Unity Test. Hercules Idleing Tomorrow I'll get all this working on Unity so it switches, hopefully. Still having trouble with the clothing though. The first rig didn't quite work. |
