Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers. Co-op multiplayer and pretty fun platformer.
Batman. Never played it personally but I hear it's really good for the NES. Ninja Turtles 2 & 3. Co-op beat-em-ups. First Ninja Turtle game isn't a beat-up-up, and insanely hard. Fun if you like that sort of thing Castlevania. Ironsword(Wizards and Warriors 2). A damn hard game, and has very weird quirky gameplay... but yet still very fun. Very nice graphics and sounds, and gameplay is somehow addictive despite being so punishing. Ninja Gaiden 2. Another one of those insanely hard platformers. Still fun even if you never do beat it. Punch Out. You get to Punch Mike Tyson. |

You could open the unit up and give it a good clean, I find that a toothbrush with a little isopropyl alcohol can be useful for cleaning fine areas such as the metal contacts of the unit. There are tutorials online about how to use a thin object such as a paper clip to manually bend each of the contact pins back into place, which seems to be one of the most effective remedies. Also when inserting the cartridge, I make sure to push it all the way in, and then hold tight on the grip handle of the cartridge and pull either left or right a little so that the cartridge is shifted (not tilted). Sometimes this can improve the connection and prevent the dreaded flashing screen. As for games, Super Mario Bros. is a classic for most NES owners. Final Fantasy also provides a hearty challenge along with a great storyline, particularly if you are a Final Fantasy fan and want to see the early roots of the series (unfortunately, the English version was only available for US, EU region consoles require a hardware modification in order to boot the game). The Legend of Zelda is another classic. Metroid is actually superb too, it has a really spooky atmosphere and is quite the adventure. If you are a Nintendo historian, then it may be worth looking to get a reproduction cartridge of the Nintendo World Championships 1990 and challenging your friends to it although these cartridges do not come cheap. |
Meanwhile, my master race SNES requires no such care/blowing.

NES wasn't really my time but I do remember watching my older brother play tons of Excitebike and Cowboy Kid |
Some great games that haven't been mentioned yet:
The Guardian Legend Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Super C Gun Nac Disney's DuckTales Journey to Silius StarTropics I would pick Mega Man 2 and Super Mario Bros 3 as my top 2 games on the console so make sure to have those. |
Oh ya, can't forget Duck Tales :)
