The fine brothers

What do you all think about that whole situation?

If you are unfamiliar http://mashable.com/2016/01/28/the-f...hers-backlash/ and want to see what it's about.

CM 02-01-2016 05:49 AM

I think they worded what they were trying to say incorrectly. I don't think they deserve all of the hate, but then again I'm not necessarily all on their side with what they're trying to do I suppose.

Striken 02-01-2016 05:57 AM

Busy with my popcorn.

Brick 02-01-2016 06:14 AM

Not a fan of them anymore. It seems like they want an internet monopoly of the whole "react" thing. They even went after Ellen because she showed some kids a few pieces of old technology on her show. The branded thing is a good idea, where you can collaborate with them and share revenue and blah blah. That's good and all. However, when they told their viewers not to support channels with a similar format to them I think a lot of people weren't cool with that.

Thallen 02-01-2016 06:20 AM

I'm sure they did it for publicity

MrSimons 02-01-2016 06:50 AM

lol thats actually pretty funny.

It's perfectly justified to be worried, but they have already said exactly what they are doing. They aren't making it so people can't make reaction videos. They are just protecting their brand.

Amazing how people expect The Fine Brothers and other Youtube celebrities to hold up a standard that the majority of people would never follow.

Midori 02-01-2016 09:20 AM

*uploads video clip of paint drying, titled "cis-9,cis-12-octadecadienoic acid reacts to oxygen for the very first time"*
*watches as video gets taken down by the Fine Brothers for copyright infringement*

Asaiki 02-01-2016 09:41 AM

Not a fan anymore, Became too greedy and Looks like the people who are reacting are now being paid. How? To fake reactions, I feel like it was genuine anymore because I just feel like it now, Not meaning this applies to anyone, just me. :)

Admiral 02-01-2016 10:51 AM

i go up and down with this, one minute im like oh maybe they're just passionate video makers who made a mistake, then I think wait the update video is basically 'oh we thought u guys were smart enough to understand but ur not so here's basically what we said'

The things they've done in the past as well, I understand protecting a brand and all but really? getting mad at ellen degeneres because she did a similar thing to you then telling your fans to boycott her show/spam her FB page? Filing copyright against some guy with 8 subs because he did a 'react' video??

Sardon 02-01-2016 02:02 PM

I don't know if he understands the concept of the internet
Or just youtube in general

One does not simply own a gendre

This is my favorite comment on that video, and holy **** they are patronizing as hell in the video.

5hift 02-01-2016 02:06 PM

The way they said it makes it sound like a ****ty Machinima program for reaction channels.

Asaiki 02-01-2016 02:14 PM

I trademarked the word Kids, Teens, and To, so I can sue them :3

Dusty 02-01-2016 02:20 PM

Reminds me of the Saga and Scrolls incident.

CM 02-01-2016 03:07 PM

sorry guys, I trademark posting on a forum so either pay up or I'm suing you

Zetectic 02-01-2016 04:09 PM

reaction vids are pretending, i wouldn't be surprised if it's some what scripted to say this line.
most of the reaction videos suck and awkward. i would watch unboxing vids over those sucky fake greedy reaction bs.

Yeah, probably to avoid things like this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-33223511.

Areo 02-01-2016 05:34 PM

I don't mind that they wanted to protect their channel name and brand, but i think that this is pushing the Boundaries of what I can call "protection". Their isn't really much information on what constitutes their "format" either. Plus trademarking the word "react" in video names is far too overreaching in my opinion.

I don't know if they deserve this much hate, but I can say that hopefully it serves as a lesson to other content creators on the Do's and Dont's of IP law.

Sardon 02-01-2016 05:55 PM

just trademarked the product : oxygen
1$ per breath

The problem is they're trying to protect something that's not theirs. It's a vague concept and they're not trying to protect it so much as trying to bully others into paying them.

I'm just relaying information I have read from reddit, but here's some interesting stuff:

Apparently Ellen did a segment on her show where she shows kids a bunch of old technology(old cellphones, typewriters, tape recorders and so on). They apparently aren't too happy with that and have called her out on twitter and asked their fans to spam the video with their youtube channel:
https://33.media.tumblr.com/e19521c3...SDN1qd8l7c.png
https://i.imgur.com/k8kudKN.png

Not cool.

Also, they have shut down videos of reactions that were uploaded before they even existed. For example this video that was uploaded in 2012, a year before their channel existed.

Coco 02-01-2016 06:48 PM

Unbelievable...and I really liked their videos...

Reaction videos have existed probably since the freaking video camera was made. They can't copyright "react" and sue anyone that makes a reaction video. wtf?? That's like Yogcast saying no one can ever record themselves playing minecraft or gary's mod because "they did it first" (which they didn't, and neither did fine brothers do reaction videos first..) They're treating this as if it was their idea and they were first and anyone that ever makes a reaction video "stole" the idea from them. Like I said...unbelievable..

Ash Ketchum 02-01-2016 07:01 PM

Shout out to Coco for using the yogscast as an example

GOAT 02-01-2016 08:55 PM

Soon YouTube revenue will be owned by the 1%. Someone get Bernie in here before it gets out of hand.

twilit 02-02-2016 12:11 AM

Never liked the channel. "reaction" videos are about as cancerous as BuzzFeed.

Anyway, the whole issue is dumb. Just because you are the most popular creator of a certain style of a medium, doesnt mean you have trademark rights to it. And you cant have trademark rights to something that is so incredibly broad and vague.

If they get the trademark, then yes, being the most popular allows you to trademark something that broad.

So, if I posted a video titled "I react to getting dumped" they should be allowed to take it down, regardless if it infringes their content, just because I use the word react?

Again, I understand protecting your brand, but this isn't protection anymore. This is stifling other channels for self benefit.

metal 02-02-2016 03:34 AM

They deserve all the hate, you cant trademark "Reaction videos" or even something more specialized like "Kid reaction or senior reaction" videos, these have existed for years before them.

Weeno 02-02-2016 03:39 AM

I don't get it so what happened? To me it seems like they're just explaining that they won't sue you for making a react video, or is it the opposite?

here's a link from reddit. apparently they registered the word REACT as their trademark.

they take revenue from react videos u make and in return u get 'tips' bs. or they are gonna sue u. it's just worded differently.

A message from the Fine Brothers
Hello,
We’re here to apologize.
We realize we built a system that could easily be used for wrong. We are fixing that. The reality that trademarks like these could be used to theoretically give companies (including ours) the power to police and control online video is a valid concern, and though we can assert our intentions are pure, there’s no way to prove them.
We have decided to do the following:
1. Rescind all of our “React” trademarks and applications.*
2. Discontinue the React World program.
3. Release all past Content ID claims.**
The concerns people have about React World are understandable, and that people see a link between that and our past video takedowns, but those were mistakes from an earlier time. It makes perfect sense for people to distrust our motives here, but we are confident that our actions will speak louder than these words moving forward.
This has been a hard week. Our plan is to keep making great content with the help of our amazing staff. Thank you for your time and for hearing us out.
Sincerely,
Benny and Rafi Fine
*This includes “React,” “Kids React,” “Elders React,” “Lyric Breakdown,” etc. Please note: It takes a while for the databases to update, but the necessary paperwork has been filed.
**Content ID is YouTube’s copyright system that automatically flags content that looks like or sounds like copyrighted content. This mostly flags videos that are direct re-uploads of our videos (which is what the system is built for), but if you know of a video that has been claimed or removed incorrectly, please email us with “false claim” in the subject line.
Looks like the internet won. But their content is still trash

Annoying.

Coco 02-02-2016 12:08 PM

There's nothing wrong with letting people have the choice of whether or not they want fine brothers to help them make react videos for a cut of the profit. It just crosses a line when they're forcing it on everyone.

It's like the google heart hand patent all over again (cept worse)

Asaiki 02-02-2016 12:46 PM

Can't believe they lost 1 million subscribers.

Kieran2820 02-02-2016 03:38 PM

Imagine someone trademarking gaming videos.
Oh god....

I used to really like them, but I think they really made the wrong decision here

Zetectic 02-02-2016 04:22 PM

all the react videos should be sued for using other people's contents without rights.

Not all. Youtube videos that are made for youtube, i.e let's plays or whatever are not copyrighted. To copyright each and every video you do, you'd have to trademark your name and/or put it as a logo in every video, or copyright all your videos seperately, i believe. Trailers do not always have copyright with them, neither does all music. Only some react videos could be copyrighted. Although, i am probably wrong, read government copyright uses and usages for full details on copywriting.

5hift 02-02-2016 08:24 PM
