Maths help: sin and cosine

Well I got my Math-Finals tomorrow and have just been doing some exercises. But I'm stuck on this part. Maybe someone does understand it on here

When I got this calculation:
http://i.imgur.com/sNOtl.png

I don't get the part inside the [] brackets
I know that they made it something like
x-3/4 = sin(φ)
but how did they mix it with the cos²(φ) to -((x-3)/4)²+1 ?

Would be cool if someone could help me

Just the names but never used it. Also it's most likely not related to what I need

Racil 06-24-2012 05:30 PM

You've basicly solved it already, you just have to put the sine in the equation.

Higbey 06-24-2012 05:38 PM

i hate math with a passion and got in fights with serveral horrible math teachers over the years, so i cant really help.

Well just looked into another solution and there it said almost the same

sin(φ) = (x-3)/4

y = 4+8*(1-sin²(φ))

sooo is cos²(φ) the same as 1-sin²(φ)?

Racil 06-24-2012 05:52 PM

Yupp.
I kind of suck at explaining stuff so i'll just give you a link to wikipedia

Sorry :(

Ah thanks a lot! You saved my day :)

Precalculus*

Gues so. Never heard of Precalculus but from what I found in Google it seems to be something like that

Dusty 06-24-2012 07:51 PM

Man I was always horrible at math.

Not related, soh cah toa is used for geometric purposes and this isn't for finding the measure of an angle or segment of a triangle.

This question is damn hard too, I'm supposedly at genius level at math and I can't even solve it QQ.

escuse me? is that supposed to be a picture of a bird or something? I don't have anything to contribute, but the fact that you're studying things like that impresses me :3

Zero02 06-24-2012 09:37 PM

I wonder if Callimuc is a junior or senior at high school

Dont get the bird picture.

And I'm only studying it because I want to pass the finals :/ else I would never touch anything like that. Maybe just some simple sin(), cos() or tan() in GS2

We have a different school system than in america. The sort school I'm in goes until the 10th class. There are 2 more schools which are until the 9th and the 13th class. Later on you can attempt (depending on your qualification) other schools.
And this is my last year and after that I most likely won't go to school anymore. Except I when I have to attempt a "jobs-school" but that will be based on the job I'll do. And the class I'm is especially for maths. I could have also choosen languages (spain or french), crafting, economic and some others but maths seemd to be the most easy one. Well I think I was wrong at that time.

We'll stick with comprehensive schools over here thank you ^_^

Oh btw this was the easier part of the finals. So yah I hate maths but yet I love to mess around with it as long as it's not too hard

The Doctor 06-24-2012 11:54 PM

Hehe I hope 9th grade math after the summer break isn't hard...

Snap. I get all pleased with myself when I figure something complicated out.

What. You are such a tool. You attempt to correct somebody's shorthand (which might I add is widely used around the world), and make a mistake the very next word.

And stop saying jea. I don't care if your German, a ******ed cross between two languages doesn't work.

Anyway, your problem was resolved, so...

Because I gues it would be called precal as the proper precal. But again I never heard of it so I'm not sure.

If you don't care if I'm german or not than simply ignore it. You should ignore it anyways if you got no clue of it since it's not the main topic on here and they simply asked me. Maybe if you got any problems you should try to solve them in an other way rather than posting BS.

Why don't you say it to yourself?if you didn't do this childish I would help you.
Even though I'm good at maths

Because this is not a forum games thread which has already been made 5 times and got no use since then. And I doubt that you could even help me.
