How do you pronounce ".gif?"

Theres apparently a good amount of people that prounounce .gif with a hard G, and a good amount of people that pronounce it with a soft g, or a "J" sound. Which one do you do? We all pronounce things in our heads differently.

Fun fact: The creators of the image file intended it to be pronounced: Jif! Did you know that?

The Doctor 07-04-2012 04:54 PM

"Gee-eye-eff"

Rexx 07-04-2012 04:55 PM

never heard anyone pronounce it like jif..isn't that a brand of peanut butter?

I also pronounce .png as pings (jokes)

Yep XD Everyone that I know says jif though. Thats actually how the creators of the image file intended it to be said.

The Doctor 07-04-2012 04:56 PM

lmao. Never heard the .jif either. Maybe it's different on the planet burger.

Seeker99 07-04-2012 05:00 PM

I make up a lot of weird pronunciations for stuff. Mainly for project files on big programs. You'll hear me calling something a .derp

Kiko 07-04-2012 05:01 PM

me neither. I say gif with a hard 'g'

Talon 07-04-2012 11:12 PM

I pronounce it .gif

Tyler 07-04-2012 11:21 PM

I hate when people pronounce it like jif in tutorials and other videos. They are just teaching more people the incorrect way of saying it. If it was intended to be said like "Jif" it would make sense to spell it that way.

Pavi 07-04-2012 11:31 PM

How do you start a thread?

MSM 07-04-2012 11:45 PM

It stands for "Graphics Interchange Format" I dont know how they could get a J in there.

Steven O'Neill (creator of jif) writes:

Another way to get the .GIF line out of Bob Berry [an image] using standard Unix tools:
~>curl http://www.olsenhome.com/gif/BOB_89A.GIF | strings | grep JIF

Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
100 37062 100 37062 0 0 69595 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 166k
|s,Oh, incidentally, it'spronounced "JIF"

Sungwonc01 07-05-2012 04:46 AM

I have never actually had to pronounce .gif in real life. In my mind though I think of it as gee-eye-ef.

Jester Lapse 07-05-2012 04:55 AM

I say jif but then david said gif and i was like wtf is that so now i say both depending on who i am talking to

twilit 07-05-2012 05:59 AM

technically, it is "gif" "ping" "jay-peg" ect. but in my mind i think "ping" is real stupid sounding so i say "pee-enn-gee".
