New Nintendo 3DS & New Nintendo 3DS LL

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...t-for-the-u-s/

That's right folks. Nintendo is releasing another version of the 3DS that is slightly better than the 3DS.

Quote:

Nintendo's been having trouble in the console market -- the Wii U has sold 6.68 million units since 2012; the PlayStation 4 has sold 10 million in nine months -- and so it's encouraging for its fans to see it offer something exciting for handhelds.
And so they decide to combat the competition with a new handheld system that literally has "New" in the title despite the fact it's appearance or features aren't too different. This is one thing I don't like about Nintendo. They release multiple versions of a handheld system. So why am I even posting this? Because these things will be getting some exclusive games that will not be compatible with older versions of the 3DS. Thoughts?

I never cared that Nintendo did this sort of thing... why would I? Technology advances very fast, and over the lifespan of a console/handheld a lot of improvements can be made. Nintendo isn't the only one to do this, even the PS1 and PS2 released various iterations with improvements to size and such.

The reason I don't care is because I don't need to buy them. I don't get any sort of benefit except convenience for buying the them. I held off and waited and got the 3DS because I liked the improvements it had over the older iterations... but if I had an older 3DS I wouldn't have felt it necessary to buy the 3DS.

However, them introducing another analog stick and exclusive games is a bit of a **** move. They launched the 3DS probably knowing that one analog stick was going to be problematic, yet here we are... practically forced to buy the newest version or miss out on some exclusive titles. At least with advances like the GBC it was advancement in technology... whereas this isn't a change due to advanced technology but merely poor decisions.

I love Nintendo, but this is a really bad decision. I'm not buying another 3DS, and if I miss out on some good titles I'm going to be pissed.

TL:DR; New hardware introduced because of better technology(GBC, smaller/slimmer consoles, bigger screens on handhelds) is absolutely okay in my opinion. New hardware introduced because of poor foresight is really, really bad. They ****ed up by not having a second analog stick/more buttons. They should have anticipated that playing certain games/genres without it would be problematic... but instead they launched the 3DS without it. Don't punish your consumers because of it.

I agree. I've only had my 3DS for a little over a year so there's no way I'm even considering buying this. Before the 3DS I held onto my original DS for years before upgrading. I don't think their sales will benefit from this in the slightest unless they release an exclusive game so great that it suckers people into upgrading.

I noticed some guy was working on a 3DS Homebrew channel and has postponed it due to this announcement... I'm pretty sure he had found a way to region unlock the 3DS, so I bet he will achieve something similar to unlock any "exclusive" games only available to the new 3DS (assuming the hardware can support it).

But yeah, I really doubt they would have any major first party titles since it isn't being released in the west.

Apparently this new 3DS sports better hardware(more powerful cpu and more ram) and additional buttons(more shoulder buttons and of course, the additional analog nub). Even if he unlocked them I doubt it would allow anyone to play them on the older versions.

That's stupid. It's not like I even used the web browser feature anyways, but still.

I also just realized the other day that the mini grey looking button on the right is the other analog stick. I was not expecting that.

I pray that there's a way to get past these filters.

Rofl I've lost all faith in nintendo right now.
They're making Xenoblade Chronicles exclusive to this "new" 3ds roflmao, that game was like top 5 rpgs of all time, still is (wii).
They make exclusives/remakes of amazing titles for their consoles only during a short period of time as an argument for the sales. Imo, a lame tactic.

I hesitated between a WiiU and a Vita with all those new titles coming out, guess I got my answer lol.
I've had the gba, gbc, sp, nds, Dsi, 3Ds lmao. But they never forced the change like that.

The way I this is how it has always been with smartphone/mobile gaming whatever you wanna call it.
Like the iPhone for example. The iPhone 5S has higher spec'd hardware than an iPhone 4. There are some games that will run better, or even exclusively on the 5S due to hardware and firmware support.
We're not used to seeing new iterations of the same device in short(er) periods of time from the conventional gaming companies such as Nintendo.
Of course having the same hardware and capabilities across the board for devices provides a much more unified experience...and easier decision making when you go to buy the actual device.
It seems like that could be a thing of the past with the release of this new 3DS.

Nintendo is taking advantage of the fact that the Vita is not doing well at all. Bump up the specs and add more features to their best selling handheld...taking it to the bank $$$

Huehue.

CluTch 09-11-2014 03:46 AM

Don't buy it. It just increases HD screens and 3D FP.

Ghettoicedtea 09-16-2014 03:17 AM

can we all just agree to call this the super 3ds instead of the new 3ds?

wildkeldeo 09-16-2014 03:23 AM

New sounds dumb. What if it's not new anymore?
