osu!

What is osu?
(from mmohuts.com) Anyone familiar with the Nintendo DS game Elite Beat Agents will feel at home with Osu! Osu is, for all practical purposes, a clone of the aforementioned game, but is completely free. A short tutorial explains the game basics; players must click on circles on the screen, slide balls across and spin their mouse pointer in circles when special spinners come up.

Sounds simple, but only some songs/maps are as easy as that. Here is a video of some of the harder gameplay featured in osu! by who most consider to be the greatest osu! players of all time:

osu! is a great game to play in your free time. Being a rhythm game based off songs, it doesn't require you to commit to long playing sessions like MOBAs such as League/DotA/Smite, features solo and multiplayer (head-to-head) play, and essentially endless songs and difficulties to keep you playing for as long as you'd like - seriously. There are hundreds of thousands of songs in every genre; the vast majority being Japanese rock/Vocaloid/electronic, but there is more than enough music of every English genre out there to satisfy everyone. There will be songs and difficulties perfect for everyone, and due to the nature of that, the replayability is endless despite the same general style of gameplay. If clicking circles and sliding sliders isn't your thing, there are also other modes like osu!mania (Guitar Hero-esque), Taiko (drum rhythm), and Catch the Fruit (literally catching fruit on a platform) that will satisfy you. In addition, it has been getting widespread recognition and popularity due to popular streamers on Twitch praising the game for its compactness and its ability to strengthen your mechanical skills on other games due to it forcing you to improve in areas such as muscle memory, reaction time, screen vision and so forth. Here's a League player's standpoint of how osu! improves his League gameplay: http://cloth5.com/10-reasons-you-should-be-playing-osu/ Customizability also never ceases due to the ability to create your own beatmaps for others to play (99.99% of beatmaps are actually community-created!), skins for the game you can create for yourself and others, and so forth. There's something for everyone.

But seriously, if you're into music and playing very relaxing and chill-atmosphere'd games, then I strongly recommend that you try osu! - I've discovered some incredible music, incredible artists, and made a ton of friends in this game. I downloaded this game a year or so ago and recently picked it up again this August, and even though I'm not too great in the scheme of high-level players like Cookiezi and rrtyui since I've only actually been playing for a little over a month (I only have like a third of Killua's playtime :(), I'm having so much fun playing this game and it's easily made its way into some of my favorite games of all time. Oh, and did I mention? It's completely free. No subscriptions, no initial cost, no sneaky in-game purchases that tempt you like Gralat packs or League of Legends skins - it's all free. You can however, pay a few bucks a year as a donation (I do, very grateful for this game) for some neat features like downloading maps from inside the client and a tiny bit more files to skin, but it's all unnecessary to play this game to the fullest.

What is Osu?
Osu is a rhythm based PC game that is played by millions of different people, more commonly played by people who come from Asia. Osu is made up for game modes, each being a different type of rhythm game, we have the more common Osu Standard, second most popular Osu Mania, Catch the Beat and Taiko. Each game mode will be further explained below.

What are the benefits from playing Osu?
When you start playing Osu, it takes a while to get the hang of it, unless you've been playing tons of mouse oriented games, it becomes challenging to even beat some of the easiest songs. After playing Osu for a bit, mouse control and reaction time really increases and you can even preform in other PC games more well. This game really helps adjusting to a new mouse or a new computer.

What do I need to play Osu?
All you need is a decent computer, my computer is pretty slow, but runs Osu smoothly, a mouse or graphics tablet. The mouse doesn't have to be some fancy $100 gaming mouse or anything, I use a pretty old mouse that I got with my computer and it works find, since I'm adjust to using it all the time.

What kind of songs are available in Osu?
The staffs of Osu do not make any songs for Osu, and every song is player made, so even you can make a song for Osu! All the staff does is approve songs that wants to be enabled for ranking. Since all the songs is player made, there is tons of different types of songs out there, but more commonly Japanese and English songs.

The Game Modes

Osu Standard
This is the most common game mode in Osu and it will be the first game mode introduced to you when you start playing Osu. This game mode consists of clicking on circles to the rhythm of the songs, there is also sliders where you click and hold for a duration of the time and spinners where you try to create circles with your cursor. The circles and sliders are all over the place and is not coming down a straight line like more common rhythm games (Guitar Hero and Rock Band). Here is video on my own game play:

Osu Mania
Osu mania is the second most popular game mode and follows the typical rhythm game mode. Beats fly for the top of the screen and you press a key by the time the beats reach the bottom of the screen. The difference is that Osu Mania has two different sub-mode, playing with four keys and then playing with seven keys, seven keys being way harder than the more common rhythm games:

Catch the Beat
This game mode is often referred as the easiest of the four, where you have to use your arrow keys and move a character at the bottom of the screen and have them collect the beats that are falling from the top of the screen.

Taiko
This is the game mode that I have the least experience and knowledge of. I know that there is four keys and a few types of beats that comes in at a single line and you have to click keys depending on the type of beat is coming through the line. Well maybe this video will help more or maybe it's the exact opposite, but whatever here is is:

Using tablets seems so much easier, I can't get past those 5 star jumps with how awkward twisting my wrist is at that speed and distance and accuracy. Just twisting the wrist itself with the mouse is annoying since I can't move straight, so I end up gliding to hit notes instead of snapping.

also TALON Y U DO DIS TO ME, Y UR VIDEO MAKE ALSO SCREW UP, my fc ;( I could've gotten more PP.
