Taking Forever to Move/Delete Files
Why does my computer take so long to move/delete files? I have a 15 MB file that it's taken about ten minutes to move from my downloads file to the desktop. This is the norm and always happens when I try to move files--it's even worse when I delete stuff, and then when I get sick of waiting for it and I hit cancel it just says "cancelling" for another several minutes before going away.
In addition to taking a long time to actually move the files, it also takes a long time to actually start doing anything. (E.g., the file I started moving 10 minutes ago... right now it says it's going at 0/bps.) I think something is halting the process at its beginning which is the majority of the wait time. I'm running Windows 7 64. I can post any other specs that are necessary, but it is a Dell XPS 8300 from about 2011 with sufficient specs that this shouldn't be happening (12 GB RAM, i7 processor, etc. etc.) I also have over half of my 1 TB of disk space unused. This has been going on for probably close to 2 years, only getting worse as time goes on. |
Try running a defrag on your computer. Might be because your computer is old and takes a long time to find the files. A defrag should fix.

10minutes for 15MB? Did you use magnets on your PC?(no dont do that)

It takes me 10 minutes to download a gb game :0

Maybe removing start ups help. In my opnion your hard disk is damaged or you have to many tasks running.

Try doing a disk cleanup, alongside defragging your computer.
Leave it on over night, since it'll sound like it will take quite a while with your issue. |
HDD is probably failing, try to backup what you can.
Don't disk cleanup / defrag as that could kill your drive quicker. Look at the Event Viewer in your System logs for disk errors: http://www.howtogeek.com/school/usin...a-pro/lesson3/ |
Have you seen a blue screen? Data disappearing(or corrupted/missing scripts)? Strange sounds coming out of the PC?

If you dont understand anything from the site that fp4 sent, you can do the error-checking here. Remember to backup first http://cdn.makeuseof.com/wp-content/...e01.png?35dc20 |

Have you tried rearranging the electrolytes? You'll need a conductive liquid, salt water will do fine. You'll need to pour the liquid into the small hole that is covered by a sticker. This will act as a glue and stabilize the electrolytes on the physical disk.

I'd personally move to a new HDD. If it's been going on for two years, it's time for a new one.
