You definitely should be more reserved than aggressive about it; that is, you like her, but you don't "care". I get weirded out when people make passes at me or have attractions and creep around like snakes or get all up in my face like it's do or die in the relationship. If you respect her, you'll respect yourself, and just let it be; you can make it obvious with time

I think it's okay to be flirtatious then, and standoffish with such behavior if she doesn't respond or makes it obvious she is uncomfortable.

This but instead of saying date I usually just aim for something more casual and specific like asking her if she wants to go the movies or eat out, date works too but I'm guessing you're in high school and so is she so I think the more casual the better.

After awhile I started to make sure I'd mention that its a date; really awkward when you don't make that clear and she thinks you are hanging out as friends.
