That's what notch said around 1.8 :/ But yeah I heard Jeb_ plans to actually do it.

No, Notch specifically said he WASN'T going to raise the world height. He felt it wasn't possible without consequences. He gave a various amount of reasons why, one of them being taller worlds means larger light calculations which means more cpu usage(which has already been steadily increasing for a long time) and another being if you start falling you will fall faster than chunks will load.
