If you're wondering why I posted this in off topic and not gaming, I feel that Virtual Reality has more potential than just gaming, so it's best kept in an open forum. Virtual reality has the potential to be used for training, education, simulation, movies/entertainment, and porn.

This topic is for open discussion about Virtual reality:

What excites you most about VR?

Do you think it will be the next big thing, or will is it just a fad like 3D TVs?

Which VR headsets interest you the most?

I'd like to add my personal opinion: I think it will be a niche market. VR headsets will not only be expensive, but also require an expensive PC to render 3d content that users partake in. You're looking at at LEAST $1,000 for a decent gaming PC+ the VR headset. Rumour is anywhere from $400-700 for the headset. And we all know decent gaming PCs that can handle 2400x1080(resolution of Oculus Rift consumer version), cost at least $800 or so to build.

The high cost of entry will limit adaption, and thus make it either a niche market, or ignored by most developers.

Additionally, at least for games, most of them don't play well with VR. Games that rely on complex controls or detailed UIs won't really go well with VR headsets.

Even with these limitations though, I think it's really cool. I hope stores like Best Buy, Gamestop, etc will demo these to attract sales. I really want to try one out, it sounds spectacular. I get sick easily though, so I want to see if it's a problem for me.

I always thought of VR being useful for archaeology or forensic purposes. Often there are environments too dangerous for humans to enter or ones that are fragile and must be preserved as vital details may be damaged/contaminated by physical entry, it may be possible to capture 3D images of the scene using a remote camera and features examined with VR before planning a recovery/exploration strategy.

Did you know, if you rearrange Jent, you get "An overused joke." I know right, crazy.

I can finally have sex with my waifu. VR wont become huge until around 2020 when there will be about 8x the amounts of ICs in them as the ones built now have. Probably be used for military first. Think operation anchorage dlc for fallout3. That is when vr will become a thing.

I'm more excited for AR (augmented reality) which puts virtual objects into your real life environment, as opposed to you stepping into a virtual environment. However, advances in VR are a lot further than advances in AR. Both are cool. Hope to see them used more often in every day life, much like how television screens are used today.

Man i just want to drive a car along a crumbling race track, only to eject from it and jump onto the top of a train, where i will get in a fistfight and beat up the goons. Then a guy will come along and blow the train up and i die.

Many things normal people have today were first used by the military. War also speeds up technology
