It's practically just making the certain parts of a hat a little bit lighter of darker to make it more realistic

Well... Both of you do need to learn something about shading:

Shading is basically reflecting the light on a sprite from a certain point of the view. Pretend you're the sun looking at a sprite face to face. The front of the sprite will be lighter while the back of the sprite would be darker.

True, it does make some sprites more realistic but it actually gives in detail. Sprites without shading are mostly critiqued.

Theres different types of shading so look at them all if you can and prefer which one you want to do

I would recommend this pixel art tutorial. http://www.natomic.com/hosted/marks/mpat/ It's what I started off with. I'd also recommend using GIMP if you still use paint.net.

What's wrong with paint.net?
