Majors

Hey, I just had a huge argument with my dad about what I want to major in college. My 1st choice is computers and 2nd is business but he doesn't support me at all and keeps insisting on me being an engineer.

I was wondering if anyone here majors in any of these and how it has resulted for them.

Lol how ironic my parents won't STFU about majoring in computer science.

I want to get into biology, specifically marine biology.

But from the way my parents put it, the programming industry is going to be in huge demand in the future. It's not that they're wrong but they should probably know that I suck ass at programming and ****ing hate it.

Honestly I thought computer science and engineering were kinda one in the same. If you major in one there's a pretty good chance that you'll end up picking up some things in the other.

Depending on the college you plan on going to, you can even get dual-degrees for these majors.

I keep telling my dad that it's gonna in high demand but he thinks it won't like ugh

Lol your dad probably still thinks this is like the 60s or something.

Nah computer scientists and programmers are going to be the new doctors and lawyers of the future.

With the way technology is going, engineering is going to become pretty redundant.

Soon we'll be programming robots to fix themselves.

I guess it depends on whos paying for it.

I think computer programming might be the easier route as well.

People nowadays can become amateur programmers all on their own just off the internet.

For engineering there's a lot of hands-on stuff that you'll need to rely on the school to provide.

I'm doing computer science and it is a lot easier compared to engineering

Dude just pay for your own schooling if you have to, but please just choose what you feel is right for you. You don't want to regret decisions later on, simply because your parents said "be an engineer." I mean, if you want to be an engineer, do it, but don't make this an easy decision for yourself.

I've been set on computer programming for a long time now and I told him I'd rather be happy at what I work as than to be rich and bored.

major in what you love to do
never chose something to major in if you don't like it or else your life we be piled with stress
(by the way i'm going to major in veterinary medicine so i don't know what to say lol)

MrSimons 04-24-2017 05:52 AM

Don't waste money going to college for something you don't want to do. It doesn't matter what you major in if you are bad at it.

Foxmon 04-24-2017 10:05 AM

Maybe showing your father points that shows how computer programming will be important for the future will help. If he doesn't understand your point, give him some time and he might come around.

Like anyone else in this thread I recommend studying what you want, and not what your father would want. It's your choice, you have to live with the decisions you make, and if he doesn't want to support you he is undermining your freedom. When you start studying you're an adult - you can make every decision in your own life without your father consent. I know it's hard to try and study without any support, but in the end I'd say it's worth it.

gonna be? it IS in high demand. programming is basically grouped as engineering anyway so whats the problemo

my major in memes is going well friends

PigParty 04-24-2017 11:57 AM

don't major in something that someone else wants you to. You're an adult & can control your own life. Parents should be supportive anyways.
