Gauging interest in 1v1 sparring league

Hi all,

I wanted to test the waters and see if any of you are interested in a 1v1 sparring league.

Personally, I think 1v1 is a much better showcase of skill (it's more fun too, more bragging rights). I miss the old tournaments on the client graal that [to me] held much more prestige for individual sparrers.

So, with that said, if enough people are interested we would need to come up with a format & also limit the number of players. If a ton of people are interested, we could have a mini-tournament where you would have to "spar in" to see if you could even join the league -> to be determined.

These are my first thoughts & I'm being ambitious:

Quote:

  • League consists of a sparring "Season," the first Season being Season 1.
  • (30-50) players total, maybe less maybe more
  • Each player would spar every other player in a (best of 3 or best of 5 series) up to 3 times for the entire season. Winner gets +3 pts, loser gets +1 pt. Ties count as nothing, if you tie you must spar again until there is a winner/loser
  • All spars would have to be recorded by a match recorder and witnessed, we would record and post on YouTube and come up with a posting format for the league so matches can be found and documented easily
  • End of season comes by a certain date && time where it is YOUR responsibility to make sure you got all your spars in. If someone refuses your challenge due to "just not wanting to spar" or something dumb; document it and that match will be counted as a loss for -2 points; TBD by the tournament staff. For each match you do not complete with an opponent you will get -2 points, this will prevent "sniping"
  • The top % (yet to be determined how many) move on to playoffs, where they will be assigned a # and we will do a live twitch stream to draw who faces who at random in a best of 5 or 10. Proceed to do all the matches until we have a finalist and Season 1 champion

Again this is just a very rough outline of how I'm thinking of running it. Any thoughts, input, criticism etc. are welcome. If enough people are interested I will be looking for tournament admins, moderators, recorders, streamers, request a sub-forum etc. so we can get this up and running and bring back the 1v1 sparring community.

Your pal,

Brett's best friend Rygor

EDIT:
If you want to help (even if you aren't a sparrer), the most needed position would be a "Match Recorder," someone who is willing to witness and record all the matches and post them on YouTube, etc. We will need a ton of people to do this if the league gets big. 5-10 people minimum.

Even the sparrers themselves could record their own match if they felt it didn't affect sparring performance.

F.A.Q

Q: How long will the Season last?
A: The season will begin January 1st and end March 15th. During this time, participants are expected to finish all spars with their opponents on their own time. March 16th, points will be calculated and March 17th will be the live twitch drawing of the brackets for playoffs.

Q: How much do I have to spar?
A: You will need to spar each participant in a best of 3 series, THREE times total for the season.
One best of 3 = a match
You must have 3 matches with every participant and you will have from January 1st to March 15th to complete these matches.
Win = +3 Pts
Loss = +1 Pts

Q: Can I refuse a spar?
A: You can refuse a match within reason, but multiple refusals to spar, especially towards the end of the season, will subject you to forfeit the match. You will lose 2 points and your opponent will gain 3.
You are allowed to refuse a spar if you just completed a match. Meaning, you don’t have to have all 3 of your matches at once if you don’t want to. This is perfectly acceptable, as we all have bad days.
You are allowed to complete all 3 of your matches in one sitting if you and your opponent agree to it, but each match will need to be recorded separately for documentation purposes.

Q: How are the matches documented?
A: Every match must be recorded, either by the sparrers themselves or anyone else who wishes to record. We will then upload the match to YouTube with uniform naming format so the match can be easily found and verified. Once verified, your points will be added or deducted.

Q: Do I need to join (GSL) or (GSL2)?
A: No, but you should. These are just guilds used as tools to help players find an opponent or match recorder in a faster manner. You will be able to look up your opponents in one place on the guild member list. Expect to see a lot more tags in the future and especially during the season.

Point system seems kinda weird, why gain anything from a loss? Wins might as well be +1 and losses +0

Westbrook Graal 12-05-2017 08:54 PM

I am interested, but my issue is; you have gray hair which makes this whole thing sorta suspicious. Can we trust you to not rig it for BRETT?

Point system is in place to reward the active sparrers, simply because my 15+ years of experience has taught me people may sign-up and go missing mid-season and we wouldn't want them to be able to move on to playoffs if they weren't active.

It would most likely work like this:

40 people sign up
Top 20 (or however many we decide) in points go on to playoffs
Bottom 20 are out

The rules are subject to change for Season 2, as I plan to make this an ongoing league inbetween GST.

Dam I always thought it was silver. Brett may be too scared to sign up, as he would never live down losing to me.

You run the risk of not truly getting the best sparrers with an activity-based system

In the end, the points system will still reward those who have the most wins i.e. the best sparrers. Once it comes playoff time, the points will no longer matter and it will come down to if you're clutch enough to win your series to advance.

I will be creating a FAQ to address more issues, but currently I am aiming for the Season to begin on January 1st and last through March 15th. Everyone will have this window to finish their matches, and on March 16th we will tally points and do a live drawing for the playoff brackets.

Yes, in fact if 2 opponents or multiple people want to hype their matches by setting a time and date to have their matches streamed that would be great.

We will try to stream all of the playoffs, and definitely the finals. There is even opportunity for someone to review the YouTube video uploads of matches and stream those or commentate if they wish.

One of the requirements is that you're above thallens trash spar tier. Maybe next season buddy

Rygor 12-06-2017 03:07 PM

Updated to 18 participants.

Not too shabby for less than 24 hours, especially since I wasn't active for almost 2 years before a couple of days ago. Cheers.
