A work in progress...

So school's out for the summer, and it's time for me to make a start on my first official game using C++ and the Allegro 5 library. It's going to be a 2D side-scrolling action game, and I'm very chuffed about it so far.

In this thread, I'll be posting updates on my progress with this game as I go along, which will hopefully allow you to throw in some ideas on what I should do with it because, at the minute, I'm not sure what I should throw into it, heck, I don't even know what to call it yet. I also hope to entice anyone who likes developing and would be happy to help (namely graphics artists, because I absolutely hate spending time drawing things), plus anyone who's half-proficient with C++.

At this moment in time:
  • I have coded a tile-based map-rendering system, which is flexible enough to allow for any type of tileset provided I know the dimensions of said tileset.
  • Got the basic character display and movement set up (and jumping), which is also flexible enough for easy changing of character sprites provided, again, I know the dimensions.
  • Used some placeholders just to demonstrate how the game will look once I get some proper graphics for it. All the flexibility is so I can easily replace the placeholders with proper graphics.

The little picture below shows the game with its placeholder images so far...

I'll say relaxed pace because that's what I have coded so far ie. WASD movement. I was planning on making some sort of Stickman Sam variant in the beginning, but I'm not sure if it'd be that appealing:

Was away for a week on a holiday of sorts, so I haven't got much done, but anyway...
Finally came up with a game concept. Just going to make a game with one guy and a load of zombies to beat the crap out of with a baseball bat. :D

Some updates:
  • Fixed a few bugs that were causing crashes and were causing unexpected behaviour.
  • Added enemies that follow you (no attack animation yet).
  • Cleaned up my code a little bit to reduce lag.

Anyone interested in drawing some graphics for me?

Reminds me of this!

Good luck with it mango!

You can use a program called "Game Maker" that does most of the coding for you, in fact, it does all of it! all you need to do is set some instructions. Game maker is perfect for 2D scrollers. Might save you some time. Good luck! :)

Those tiles are pretty. If you aren't using them for anything anymore and feel like sharing, I'd like to tone them down a bit and use them in my game.
