Conclusion: they are not private just pay more attention the fb news ;)

Kinda unrelated, but I get PMs about it being unfair to some players in different timezones not getting to participate in auctions.

Maybe there could be an Auction Bot much like the Event Bot that automatically hosts an auctions? Could do an auction every 8 hours so there's 3 a day, and does a good job at covering all timezones? It could randomly select an item from a list of possible auctionable items to auction off.

I never really see auctions, and I live in the Pacific Time Zone, so its not like time is a problem for me.

Auctions are supposed to auction off rares. If we start to do auctions each day then they aren't exactly rare, they're just somewhat harder to get items.
