Good question. As you can see in the templates I have attached there is a complete and incomplete one. The incomplete one is known as a stab sword because it only shows one view when swung in a direction. I believe you can use an incomplete template, but I'm not sure. I'd just use a full template, make a new layer, and draw only over the parts you'll be using and leave the rest blank.
