You could never message people from jail. There would always be an error message saying "You can not send messages from jail!".
I think banning is more fair anyway, so I'm glad they removed the jail. It makes more sense to just disallow the player from playing, rather than make them destroy their iDevice's battery life by sitting there.

I think more players would actually be causing trouble if there was still jail. I myself tried to get in trouble when they still had it so I could get thrown in there lol. Yeah, there was no pming, but Firreen might have meant in-game chat which you could do. It's good they removed the jail so players are discouraged to cause mischief in the game and it's a better method for as you said it destroyed your iPod's battery.
