Who ever thinks Jailbreaking messes up your iDevice are completely wrong.
Jailbreaking itself does not harm your device at all, it doesn't make it slow or anything, but if you are new to Cydia and don't know what your doing you can seriously mess things up. Don't download any un required packages and you'll be fine.
