Both of them are older than Death Note, just less mainstream. I'm really not a big fan of Shonen Jump stuff, I prefer anime with more substance (the very very large exception being Death Note, but an anime of that quality is rare for Shonen Jump).
I love Sato and Itoshiki-sensei so much because they, more than any other character I've encountered, are the most relatable to me. I heavily empathize with the certifiable hikkikomori that is Sato, the pessimistic school teacher that is Itoshiki, and I really understand where they're coming from.
If anyone hasn't I highly recommend watching both these anime, they're not only hilarious but make some rather profound statements about people, society, and just life in general. I particularly recommend NHK, since Zetsubou Sensei may be a little too weird for some and they may not get it.

I'll have to try those. I'm always up for a new good anime. They sound interesting.
