It's an edit because it's more than just a recolor. I know it doesn't take much, but it does count as an edit because it does have a quite a difference in look between the two.

Yea but you didn't made it since it wasn't edited heavily. Again, all you did was recolored the body and shifted the pixels.
Heres the equivalent of what you're showing me, based on one of my old sprites (even though the example i posted looks somewhat weak):

You just recolored and shifted a few pixels to easily say that you can claim it yours and that you made the sprite.
Thats not an edit.. Comparing between the example you posted, it looks more of a recolor to be honest.
Post a different example of what you mean please
