I don't sound smart. I am. I learned about that article a long time ago, so I went on over to read it again. At least I don't copy it word for word. And when I do, I give a source.
Katanas are actually a type of Japanese Sword (Nihonto). The katana is simply the most popularized of all the swords.
The katana is traditionally worn by samurai, not ninja. That's not to say ninja didn't use them.
