Listen to what? There's no other options. Internet is a part of life so you can't just strike, and if you did you'd never convince enough people to do so to actually make them give a ****. There's nothing we, the consumer can ever do. It's up to competing services to offer better speeds at better rates, but that's ****ing hard as hell to do in the US when the very providers who you're trying to compete against own the lines you need to use to provide service.
Hopefully Google's new Fiber service will become successful enough so that even if it fails in the long-run, it gains enough attention to have your average American know they can get much better at a much cheaper rate.

$70 a month for... is it 1GB/s or 1TB/s? With that Internet, I could stream netflix on all my devices while torrenting lots of stuff at once :o
