Honestly, regardless if you're an apple fanboy, apple does both and its pretty much a fact. iPhone and iPod batteries are literally designed to slowly die over time, and if that doesn't get you half the apps on the app store will be obsolete when you're device is 4+ years old.

All rechargeable batteries are like this, it's a
technical limitation not a design decision.
