Don't know about the differences, but iOS is just an acronym for operating system, and the 'i' in front of it is sort of Apple's trademark for its products nowadays. Initially, the 'i' stood for internet long ago because it was difficult to set up a computer with an internet connection. I think the iMac was the first instance of its use.
I'm sure you could find the differences between the two by a few google searches.

I sudgest you keep yout iPhone 4 the Iphone 5 makes you purchase way more stuff like a new charger and so forth cause the old wall charger does not work
