When I was Boss of Black Holst back in 2004, and somebody asked me if they could join, if I was unaware of their PK Abilities, I'd give them the choice to either fight me in a spar arena, fight me inside Black Holst base, or fight me in Black Holst's front yard.
I preferred to fight them in the base or front yard, because that tested their abilities and showcased their usefulness in an actual raid or defend scenario. Spars were acceptable too, because lame guns like the Souizen and BAR didn't exist.
If they could hit me more than three times, they were in.
80% of them failed.
If I were to seriously run a gang on iEra, I would probably omit open spars as way of entry, unless they used a gun that has merit. I don't recruit people that require handicaps.

That is a good way to show abilities but I personally would rather see someone in a base or somewhere with obstacles so it's possible to see how they react with what's around them such as using cover. Spar shows raw skill though.
