I've never played with Satchel Charges on iEra, so I can't really say what they are here.

I do know that Satchels kicked ass on PC Era back in 2004-ish.
They had two options:

• Timed Explosion: you would set the time (5-99 seconds), set it down, and it would count down to 0, and explode.
• Toss: throw them about 6 tiles away from you, and explode upon landing.

Era PC also had Trip Mines in about 2005, which sounds like your C4 idea.
It looks like they changed the Trip mines since then, because they had better graphics and ganis before, but here's a video that pretty much shows how they worked:
