If it is just to get their ego up well that is just bad since they will just turn to graal where they will always be "popular".

Well in all honestly most people who have large egos and are assholes about it tend to be the kind of people who create some false sense of reality about themselves. They don't get an ego because they're popular, they get an ego because they think they're popular.
