I figured he went on vacation or something. So it kind of hinted he quit after the first month.

If you had looked at his status, or his guild news, or his side-guild news, or if you had even set a PULSE, PULSE<3 or CC tag it would have been pretty obvious he quit.
Awhile after he left he popped up on some IMs for awhile, I was never that close with the guy but he was a legend.
