HoN sucked since 2011. They tried to copy LoL's model for new players and failed horribly. The balancing that S2 did was also complete trash, at one point they were consistently releasing their own heroes and making them overpowered on purpose (sell more early access). HoN was good for people who wanted "Dota 2", but since Dota 2 was announced HoN became redundant.

They changed it since. All heros are free for everyone now(legacy players got a 2/game silver coin boost so they don't QQ). the issue with them copying LoL's model in the first place was that players who bought it had all the heros for like $30, so you had to pay like $300+ for all of the heros or just be limited, which made free players hate it. When Dota 2 was announced to have all heros free, they had to do it or have their game die to Dota 2.
