I suppose they're trying to go back to Sonic's roots, but it really looks like they're trying too hard.

I think you're being a little over critical. I can't see how they're trying to hard considering they are actually injecting some new ideas into the series and making it more different than it ever has been. If you're referring to the style, the style seems to be looking great in my opinion. It looks to me as if its the first true 3D representation of the 2D games from the 90's. I honestly hated the realistic approach that sonic has been taking over the last decade. The reason I hate realistic sonic games like that is because it further proves that 3D sonic games dont have a standard style, or a set universe. They don't feel like sonic. Lost Words seems to finally be going back to a universe that feels more like "Sonic".

As a game, it [generations] sucked. The hub world was nothing compared to the original Sonic Adventure and the story/boss was complete and absolute ass.

If you think the Adventure series had better gameplay than Generations, I don't think I should be arguing with you because your opinion is so wildly different than mine I could never even comprehend what was going in your head. The reason I said that Generations and colors were great was because they finally nailed the core gameplay down in those games. Adventure was a mess. I could care less about the hub world, the story, or whatever. That isn't what makes a sonic game, and it never has been.
Oh yeah, and here's the box art:
