There are a lot of things that can go wrong cooking, but grease is the most dangerous and "finding things out on your own" are how houses actually get burnt down. It only takes a small portion of water(teaspoon) in deep enough grease to erupt into a huge ball of fire.

My mishap was when I tried to make liquid cheese. Even my dog wouldn't eat it, mayonaise, butter, cheese and pepper are gross.
